“True, but still.”
The ref awarded Argentina with a free kick, and play resumed, but the two players were still glued together.
I was about to point out how obvious they were, but Luke interrupted my thought. “Maybe you’re right. They seem pretty…”
“Into each other?”
And then we spent the rest of the half pretending we knew what they were saying to each other, as the ball ricocheted around the field.
It was scoreless at the half. Luke and I left our seats to find something to nibble on. Before the game, we did get cinnamon rolls. They lived up to the name of the shop, but it wasn’t a full meal. Since we were both still hungry and with our Olympic events over, I bought us each two slices of pizza and drinks. After all, our stomachs could afford to expand a little.
Until training starts again.
“I don’t know how you drink that stuff,” I said, using my slice to point at Luke’s Diet Coke.
“I don’t know how you drink that much sugar,” Luke retorted.
“Like artificial sweetener is any better?”
Luke shrugged. “My mom drinks this stuff. It was always in our house growing up. I got used to the taste.”
“Speaking of your mom, how did your goodbye go? We didn’t talk last night.” I felt my cheeks grow hot. The memory of getting plowed, recalling the sensation of Luke’s cock inside me, was enough to distract me from the answer Luke was giving. “I’m sorry. Can you say that again? I…”
Luke sighed. “As long as you were daydreaming about me, and not the Argentinian bulge bandit.”
“Bulge bandit?”
“What? Too campy?”
“Why bandit? He didn’t steal anything.”
“Maybe he stole the German guy’s heart?” Luke clasped his hands under his chin like a dork.
I stabbed a finger in the air towards him. “I knew you believed in them.”
“Okay, getting back to your question, my mom was good. I’m still kind of shocked she’s being so supportive. She wasn’t completely awful the last few years, but I still remember Brisbane like it was yesterday. I have to believe her, though. Maybe seeing us kiss was enough for her? Maybe she was having doubts before that?”
“I could see that. It’s not easy or common, but people can change.”
“I know. That’s why I’m giving her this chance. I don’t have much to lose. If she disappoints me again, I still have you.”
Aw.
I leaned across the table and pursed my lips. He accepted my kiss, then said, “Looks like the crowd’s thinning out. We should get back to our seats.”
Argentina ended up winning. The bulge bandit stole a goal from the other team with less than five minutes in the game, and Germany didn’t recover.
I felt bad for the German players, though they still won a silver medal. They played their hearts out for ninety minutes and Argentina took it away in a second. They still had a chance with five minutes left, but it’s hard to bounce back. I knew the feeling. Gymnastics was similar in that respect.
But it was apparent my heart was better at bouncing back than I thought. The man sitting next to me was the man I fell in love with. The man I was still in love with.
And I was so glad I hadn’t blurted it out right after he fucked me.
I had the thought, but a confession that important needed to be taken seriously. And not involve our penises if I could help it.
We left the stadium along with half of England. As Luke navigated through the massive crowd, I held onto his shirt from behind since I was on my phone. I was trying to find the way back to our hotel, when a group text came through.
Colton: Hey guys, where y’all at? Boys night?
