“I wouldn’t say a thing, Jack. You know that.”

“I know. I just needed to say it.”

Gareth smiled, but didn’t say anything.

“What?” I asked.

“Physical my ass. You’ve got it bad.”

There wasn’t much point in denying it, but I wasn’t going to confirm it either.

“That’s okay,” Gareth continued. “You don’t need to say anything else. I know what it’s like to date someone with…special circumstances.”

When I pulled into the driveway, Clayton’s car was gone and the lights were off. I knew no one was home. Once in the kitchen, I dropped my keys on the counter and went over to the basement door to look at the calendar.

Hockey practice.

Clayton must be picking Henry up.

On the way home, I was trying to decide whether or not to ask Clayton for another night together. I knew with Henry home, he’d be overly cautious. There was no way he’d come to the basement, but maybe I could convince him to let me sneak up to his bedroom.

Maybe I could make it worth his while.

I went down the stairs two at a time and hurried over to my dresser. Quickly, I dropped my pants and fished through my underwear to find it. It had to be fast if I was going to get it on. The metal felt cold against my skin. I was already hardening.

I softened enough to slip on the last piece and locked it in place.

Ding dong.

Jesus. What timing.

I pulled my jock back up and re-buttoned my jeans.

Ding dong.

“I’m coming!” I yelled, not that they could hear me.

I opened the door to find an older woman wearing a worried expression.

“Oh, I’m so sorry to bother you…I was looking for Clayton or Henry.”

“They’re out at hockey practice. I’m Jack, by the way.” I held out my hand, then motioned behind me. “Clayton rented out the basement to me.”

“I’m Nancy.” She shook my hand, but seemed distracted. “I live a few streets over. My dog is missing and someone called and said he’d been spotted on this street. I was hoping they could help me look.”

“I’m not sure when they’ll be back, but I can help.”

“Oh, that’s so sweet of you. Are you sure?” she asked.

“Of course. Let me just grab my coat. Why don’t you come in out of the cold for a minute?”

She took the offer and before I turned away, I noticed her shivering. I made sure to grab an extra scarf when I got my jacket.

“I’m ready, and I grabbed this for you.”

“Oh my, thank you.” She took the scarf from me. “I ran so fast out of the house, I wasn’t even thinking.”
