“What’s good?” Kilo said. “Congratulations on the wedding and shit, but if my brother ever act up…” his voice trailed off.
“What?” I asked, eyes wide as planets, knowing Brick would shoot us both.
“Nothing!” Pistol answered for him, punching him in the stomach so hard that he hollered and doubled over. I couldn’t hold back my laughter. I learned early on that if anything came to Kilo’s head, it was coming out of his mouth just like that.
“Yeah, congratulations,” Pistol mumbled.
“Thank you both,” I said with a smile.
“So… do we get to call you sis now? And maybe come over for Sunday dinner and shit? Ma tries to do it once a month… but she gets busy sometimes.” My smile widened at how boyish Kilo looked asking that.
“You know what? I’d have to check with your brother, but I like that idea. I have a big brother, but clearly we don’t really talk. It feels nice to know that now I have two more.” Tre didn’t even bother to reply to the RSVP I sent him, so I wasn’t shocked in the least when he didn’t show up to the wedding. My words made a smile break out on Kilo’s face and he had to turn away to avoid showing every one of his teeth and a set of gold bottoms. I even noticed Pistol’s face soften a little, but I didn’t acknowledge either because I know how weird men got when you caught them being sentimental.
“We just wanted to tell you that you’re a West now. If you ever need anything, just know we got you,” Pistol said in a low grumble.
“I appreciate that. The same goes for me, if y’all ever need anything.” I tried not to tear up at the fact that Brick’s family showed me more love on my wedding day than my parents. The two of them stayed glued to their seats with bitter expressions on their faces all night. Kilo and Pistol gave me a polite nod, then disappeared out the side door. I had learned enough about them to know that they were about to smoke. I continued making my way back into the ballroom to join the rest of the wedding party.
“Stasha… are you good, girl?” I asked, taking a seat next to her. She had been moping around for the past twelve hours. She let out a long, dramatic sigh and glared over at our parents’ assigned table before shaking her head and looking back at me.
“I’m good. So happy for you.” If she was trying to act unbothered, she was doing a terrible job. The girl had been looking off into space like she was about to burst into tears all night.
“Stash, just tell me what’s wrong.” I tried again.
“I just don’t want things to change,” she said softly. “You seem like you’re happy with him, but you’re changing, Des. I guess I’m just wondering where I fit into your new life.” My heart softened and I felt bad about all the times I found myself getting annoyed with her over the last few weeks.
“Stash, you fit in where you always have. As my best friend. What do you mean?” Since we sat next to each other in Mrs. Pope’s fifth grade English class, Stasha had gone through everything with me. No matter how different our choices were, I could never leave her behind.
“You mean that?” she asked softly?
“Of course.” I promised.
A few hours later, I was still having the time of my life, Eden force fed me multiple shots. Brick kept having drinks dropped off to me every time my glass got low and telling me how edible I looked. I wasn’t sloppy drunk, but I was one Lemon Drop away from hopping on the mic and giving my best Lil’ Kim impression.
One of the highlights of the night had to be when Stasha accidentally caught the bouquet. Kilo ended up catching the garter, and naturally, wound up giving her a lap dance that put Big Dick Draco’s to shame. The pair disappeared immediately after that and had yet to resurface. I guess that was the point where my parents decided they had enough because after a hushed argument, Daddy came over to tell me they were leaving. No congratulations, hugs, or well wishes, just a judgmental look at my dress before they hurried out the door.
“Come dance with a nigga,” Brick said as he walked up. He wrapped his arms around me and kissed the side of my neck which made me sway on my feet. He and Eden were on Destiny Duty all night, because every time I had a free moment, one of them was whisking me away to do some foolery. I knew I would be threatening them to delete some of the pictures and videos they took of the shenanigans.
“I don’t dance like that,” I said, laughing at the slight slur in his words and the way his eyes lowered. He didn’t usually drink that much, but he had clearly had his fair share of libations that night as well.
“Well you about to… Come put this ass on your husband, baby. I don’t even care if you come out here and praise dance for a nigga.” He didn’t give me a chance to protest as he pulled me out to the dance floor, turned me around, and started dancing on me from behind.
“Brick, please!” I yelled through laughter as he danced in circles around me, his normally too cool demeanor nowhere to be found. I caved and started dancing with him, off beat I’m sure, but I didn’t even care. It felt so good to just be, have fun, and grind on my husband with no fear of judgement.
“I can’t wait to taste that pussy tonight,” he growled in my ear as he held me tight and we swayed to the music. My eyes widened in shock while my body completely melted into his.
“I thought you didn’t do that?” I asked. Through further late night conversations, he revealed to me that he had only done that with the one girl who left him, years ago. I hadn’t even considered the possibility.
“I ain’t never been married before either. I fully intend on turning you inside out tonight.” His promises sent heat straight down between my legs. I almost grabbed the mic from the DJ to shut it down right then, but I saw how much fun everyone was having, so I decided to suffer through it for just a little longer.

“Welcome home,” my husband said as he opened the door to his house. I just smiled as I took in my new place of residence. The last time I came over, it was dark, in the middle of the night, and I was too busy trying to get rid of my virginity to notice how nice it was. I could tell that Kalida either helped him decorate or passed down her style to him. Everything was clean, sleek, and had that cozy element to it just like her home. Large ceilings with huge windows framed the space, and every piece of furniture or decor looked handpicked to compliment him impeccably.
I didn’t have much time for the tour, because the moment we were inside the house, I felt myself being ushered to the sofa.
“Lay back,” he growled, voice low and commanding as he pushed me down on his huge sectional. His tux jacket and bow tie had disappeared long ago, and he stepped forward while unbuttoning his shirt quickly.
“W-What are you doing?” I asked, doing my best to scoot back on the couch.
