“The ending stinks.” He said it before she could. “I know.”
She stared at him. “You know?”
“I knew when I sent it.” He turned away, pacing the three steps her apartment allowed before hitting a wall. “I knew when I was writing it. I just—I couldn’t figure out how to fix it.”
“You killed Elara!” The words burst out of her, and he almost smiled at the outrage in her voice. This was the Livvie he remembered—passionate, fierce, unable to let a story be less than it could be. “Nate, you killed the one person he was supposed to rescue. And the prophecy said ‘two hearts, one blade’—together. Not Aldric alone. Not him walking off into the sunset with nothing but his grief and then dying. What were you thinking?”
He stopped pacing. His shoulders dropped.
“I was thinking,” he said, and his voice went rough, “I’d pushed away the only person who mattered to me. I was thinking that I’d told you to leave, and you’d left, and maybe I deserved to write a story where the hero loses everything.”
The kettle screamed. Livvie grabbed it off the burner, killing the whistle.
“You were in a bad place,” she said.
“I was in a terrible place.” He turned to face her. “I’d just destroyed the best thing that had happened to me in three years, and I didn’t know how to fix it, so I—” He gestured helplessly. “I wrote Aldric’s death because that’s what it felt like. Losing you.”
The silence stretched between them. The city hummed outside. Someone honked a horn. A siren wailed in the distance.
“Well,” Livvie said finally. “That’s very dramatic.”
A surprised laugh escaped him. “I’m a writer. Dramatic is what I do.”
“It’s also a terrible ending.”
“You mentioned that.”
She set down the kettle. Took a breath. Something shifted in her expression—a decision being made.
“Come here.”
She reached out and took his hand—the first intentional contact since she’d let him through the door. Her fingers closed around his, warm and certain, and his heart stuttered in his chest.
She led him across the apartment to the sliding door that opened onto her tiny balcony. And Nate went still.
The glass was almost invisible behind the explosion of color. Yellow Post-its for plot:

The healing pool from Book 2—callback!
Blue for character:
Aldric’s arc = learning to accept help
Elara’s sacrifice = she shields him, not death but transformation. Kaela rescues him
Pink for theme:
LOVE SURVIVES. That’s the point.
Grief doesn’t mean the story ends
Green for wild cards:
What if the dragon isn’t killed but redeemed?
