My heart skips like a kid with no place to be and then stops dead when I watch Tamara follow the silver-haired man towards one of the ships moored up in the harbor. If I only had my brother’s confidence. Each time I watch her walk away, I wonder if it will be the last time I see her, and this irrational fear isn’t solely based on the job we do. It’s partly because I don’t know how she feels about me.

“What makes you so sure?” There’s a tremor in my voice.

“If she didn’t, she’d have killed me when she had the chance.”

We fall quiet while Tamara is out of sight below deck of the boat she boarded with the older guy. One of Aiden’s foot soldiers climbs aboard and speaks to the captain, turning around and giving us a brief nod as his gaze skims our position.

“Why did she have to go below deck?” I mutter under my breath.

“To keep up appearances. Jesus…” Connor rolls his eyes. “She’s armed. I wouldn’t fancy their chances against her, if they try anything. She’s a fucking lethal weapon.”

Which is exactly what Leonid wanted her to be.

“That isn’t what I see when I look at her.”

“Aye, I know.”

I chuckle. “Is that your opinion as Doctor Love Guru or as my little brother?”

He doesn’t respond because Tamara reappears on deck, thanks someone who remains just out of view, and then walks back down the ramp. She avoids eye contact with anyone else, her pace unhurried but steady as she heads our way.

Connor and I duck behind the container and wait for her to join us.

“They remember Ivana,” she says, tugging the wig off. “She called herself Yelena. At first, they thought I was her with the wig on.”

“Do they know where she is?” I ask.

“They haven’t seen her since the night the warehouse blew up.” Which ties in with what I told her before.

Shit!

“The skipper of the boat.” Her gaze drifts towards the water. “He said he saw her that night boarding a boat owned by the Russians.”

“The Petrovs?” I ask.

“He didn’t know the name, but he said he called out to her because she was surrounded by men, and he was worried that she was in trouble.” Her eyes darken as she turns back to face us. “She wasn’t struggling. She didn’t cry for help. She simply looked at him and shook her head, and he let it go.”

“He didn’t think to fucking report it?” Connor’s voice is laced with anger.

“He did report it,” she says. “But there was no one named Yelena registered to work here, and it wasn’t enough for the cops to send out a search party.”

TAMARA

My pussy is still tingling when I get out of Finn’s bed, pull on my clothes, and sneak through his apartment to the front door. I can hear him singing in the shower, a song I don’t recognize, lyrics that evoke no memories in me because I’ve never heard the tune before.

My panties rub between my legs, and my clit spasms from the orgasms that seem to erupt on touch these days. I could turn around, get undressed, climb back into his still-warm bed and ask him to fuck me again while he is still wet from the shower.

It’s tempting.

My hesitancy will be no consolation for Finn when he discovers what I’m about to do, but I have to see it through. For Ivana’s sake. Once I know that she is safe, I can focus on Finn and think about the future.

I take a deep breath, open the door, and step outside onto the landing where the lights are too bright and the peepholes in the other doors are watching me.

Then I lock the door behind me and pocket both keys, mine and Finn’s.

I slide the burner phone from my pocket, locate the only number added to the Contacts App, and type out a message:
