Jasper squeaked. “Hawk, you’re gonna—”

Bam!

Sadly, the large cardboard boxes were so soggy and heavy with rain, the few he’d rammed into had simply splattered against the front of the Jeep. On the plus side, they were filled with rolls of toilet paper which had cushioned the blow.

Jasper moaned and Hawk grabbed his wrist.

“Are you all right?”

Jasper held a hand to his forehead. “Yeah. Smacked my head on the dashboard.” He gave Hawk a wry smile. “Hardly the worst thing I’ve experienced in the past several months.”

Hawk’s gut clenched at his mate’s words, anger coursing through him over what he must have endured. As much as it would pain him to hear what had happened to Jasper, he had to know. Both to stop whatever atrocities were being perpetrated and to seek vengeance for what they’d done to his fated one.

The rumbling chorus of engines heralding the arrival of approaching vehicles snapped him out of his reverie.

But first, we have to get the fuck outta here.

Chapter Four

Jasper whipped his head around at the roar of the trucks bearing down on them. Perhaps he’d made a mistake by trusting Hawk, even though something buried inside, some part of him he couldn’t access, kept urging him to place his faith in the strong beta. However, they had maybe thirty seconds before they were screwed if Hawk didn’t come up with a plan for them to get away.

He couldn’t keep his eyes off the three Jeeps that were now in view, at least two men—from what he could tell—on each vehicle.

Holy shit. What will they do to us?

Jasper found himself as worried about Hawk’s fate as his own.

“Let’s go!”

Hawk grabbed the collar of the bulky jacket Jasper still wore and yanked him out of the passenger seat. He dragged him by the arm to the other side of their destroyed ride, along with the heap of waterlogged boxes and hundreds of toilet paper roll packages. Jasper had been so transfixed by their impending doom, he hadn’t realized Hawk was no longer in the vehicle. As he stumbled behind Hawk, who was leading them around the mountain of annihilated supplies, he noted that no one would be able to drive through the unintentional barrier Hawk had created.

They rounded the other side of the mess and Jasper let out a low whistle at the sight before him, gazing in awe at the black beauty Hawk was tossing the duffel into.

“Wow. Whose Charger is that?”

“Some dickwad named David. He won’t mind if we borrow it.” Hawk slammed the back door and opened the passenger side one. “Get in and fasten your seatbelt. No guarantees this ride will be any smoother.”

Jasper shook his head but did as he was told. Right as he could hear the shouts of the men instead of only their vehicles, Hawk had managed to hotwire the muscle car and revved the engine. He hunched down in the seat as if hiding from sight and grabbed Jasper’s sleeve.

“Get down, cover your head!”

Several shots rang out before the words had barely left Hawk’s mouth, with at least two bullets pinging off the side of the car.

That sucks.

Despite the life or death circumstances, it was still a sin to desecrate such a fine vehicle.

The sudden momentum of the car jerked him backward as the vehicle shot forward like a rocket. This time, Jasper braced himself against the glovebox, bemoaning the fact that the interior didn’t boast an ‘oh shit’ handle in the front seat. In less than a minute, though, it became clear that stealing the muscle car had been worth it. Even if their pursuers managed to get around the toilet paper barrier, no hope existed of them catching up to the Charger.

Jasper chuckled then petted the dashboard. “Never thought I’d get the chance to ride in one of these.” Whoever that David guy is, he really tricked out his ride.

Hawk snorted. “Yeah, well you can thank the mealy-mouthed brat who got this baby as a birthday present from his deep-pockets father. Gods only knows what sort of questionable shit that guy’s involved in.”

As the nighttime scenery raced by, no light other than that which was cast by the car illuminated the wooded surroundings. Jasper stared out the window and pondered which of the bajillion questions he had swimming through his head he wanted to ask Hawk first. He wanted to avoid badgering his savior.

I hope that’s what he is.

But now that it seemed they were at least temporarily safe, it was time to get more info.
