Adam pulled open the transport door.

“We leave in sixty seconds.”

Janice sat beside Samir, monitoring the unit of blood flowing into his arm.

“How is he?” I asked.

“Alive.”

Her expression told me how fragile that answer was.

Two medics secured Samir’s stretcher as Lucas helped me inside.

I expected him to release my hand.

He didn’t.

He climbed in after me and took the seat directly across from mine.

Only when the doors slammed shut did our fingers separate.

The engine roared.

The transport lurched forward.

Outside, soldiers shouted to one another as the convoy began moving.

Hawk rode in the lead vehicle.

Adam and Boone took the second.

Russ rode behind us with the rest of the extraction team.

Lucas sat with his rifle across his knees, his gaze moving constantly.

Windows.

Doors.

The wounded.

Me.

Always me.

I pressed a clean bandage against the cut on my thigh.

“You’re staring.”

“I’m watching.”

“There’s a difference?”

“Yes.”

“What is it?”

“If I were staring, you’d know.”
