The trees rose toward us.
Branches struck the underside of the helicopter.
Metal tore.
The cabin spun.
I held on to Lucas.
He held on to me.
The last thing I heard before the world went black was his voice.
Not shouting.
Not praying.
Making a promise.
“I’m not letting you go again.”

The helicopter struck the mountain sideways.
Metal screamed.
Glass exploded.
The world spun once.
Twice.
Then stopped so violently every bone in my body felt as though it had shattered.
For several seconds, I heard nothing.
Not the warning alarms.
Not the groaning metal.
Not the dying rotors.
Only the memory of Wynn saying my name.
I opened my eyes.
Smoke filled the cabin.
The helicopter rested at an angle against several trees, its broken nose hanging over the edge of a ravine.
