“That isn’t an answer.”
“It’s the only one I can give you.”
I hated that sentence.
It had lived between us for most of our marriage.
I looked away before he could see how much it still hurt.
Lucas noticed anyway.
“I’m sorry.”
My gaze returned to his.
He had almost never apologized for classified answers before.
He would simply become quiet.
Distant.
Impossible to reach.
Now he was trying.
That mattered.
“I know there are things you can’t tell me,” I said.
“I didn’t know how to tell you anything.”
“So you told me nothing.”
“Yes.”
His silver eyes held mine.
“I thought silence kept you safe.”
“It made me lonely.”
“I know.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“I think you’re beginning to know.”
He absorbed the difference.
Then nodded.
“You’re right.”
Adam called from the rear of the post.
“Lucas.”
