Maybe a new man.

I’d forced myself not to search for her.

Not to ask mutual friends how she was doing.

Not to type her name into an internet search bar at two in the morning just to see her face.

I’d told myself staying away was the kindest thing I could do.

All that time, she had still been Wynn Spencer.

And she had hidden the most dangerous evidence she’d ever uncovered inside the old joint safety-deposit box we’d opened in Geneva while we were married.

Maybe some part of me was still waiting for you to come back.

Her words wouldn’t leave me.

Neither would the image of her standing in our kitchen six years ago.

Divorce papers between us.

Her emerald eyes dry.

Her shoulders straight.

I’d mistaken her control for certainty.

I’d thought she wanted me gone.

Now I understood.

Wynn hadn’t been asking me to sign those papers.

She’d been asking me to stop her.

And I hadn’t.

“Lucas.”

Adam’s voice pulled me back to the mountain.

He stood beside the armored transport, watching the medics load the last civilians.

“We need to move.”

I glanced toward the medical vehicle.

Wynn was inside with Janice.

She knelt beside Samir, one hand pressing gauze against his wound while the other held an IV bag above him.

Blood covered her clothes.

Her hair had come loose from its tie.

A bruise darkened her cheek.

She was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
