Walking out of the bathroom of their room, Zack stopped short at the vision in front of him. Ava was bent at the mirror putting an earring in. Her hair was swept up in a complicated twist thing that showed off the long elegant line of her neck.

Releasing her, he stepped back and walked to the wardrobe and pulled out his tux, laying it on the bed.

“We all set for tonight?” she asked, and he knew she was nervous.

“Yeah baby,” he said as he pulled on his shirt, and threaded the cufflinks through. “Jack and Daniel, have it all set for the team to move the civilians into the Estate. Liam, Nate, and Drew have done a phenomenal job getting it ready in time. But it’s done, and honestly, it’s safer than Buckingham Palace now, and believe me that place is pretty fucking secure.”

She was looking at him in the mirror as she fixed her smudged make-up and he couldn’t help the self-satisfied grin that curved his mouth. Ava looked well fucked, and no amount of makeup would disguise that fact, and he liked it. What a meathead he was turning into he thought sardonically.

“What about the ball?”

“We’re going in the limo with Lucy and Sly. Drew and Angel and Roz and Kanan are meeting us there. The surveillance shows the two exits and the rest of Zenobi are providing backup for us. Will has managed to remote access their cameras and will be keeping us appraised of things through the comm units we’ll be wearing. He has also kindly adapted the watches for the ladies into tiny little ankle bracelets. It should work perfectly as you all have long dresses.” He watched her nod as he put on his jacket and crossed to her, bending over so that they were at eye level. “I won’t let anything happen to you baby!” he stated vehemently.

She cupped his cheek in her hand, and he turned to kiss her palm. “I know you won’t. It’s you I worry about. I just have an awful feeling about this. I couldn’t bear to lose you, Zack.”

“You won’t baby, I promise. God wouldn’t be cruel enough to break us apart when we have just found each other again.” But Zack knew he would, he’d seen it countless times before.
