Great, he’s gone back to douchebag mode. It hurt that it had all been an act, she had felt sure that during the evening he had enjoyed himself too. She keyed her passcode in and handed back the phone. He quickly uploaded the images of them together and added some text. ‘Date night with my stunning wife. So blessed to spend the rest of my life with her.’

The words were beautiful and as she looked at the picture of them together. Emme thought they had pulled it off. To anyone else, they looked like a couple in love.

“I’m going to bed,” she said with a yawn.

He didn’t look up but nodded. “Goodnight.”

As Emme trudged up the stairs, she could feel eyes on her and turned at the top to look back at him, but his head was down again. No, Shane was not interested in her body and she needed to keep things strictly professional between them.

Undressing, she slipped into the bathroom and put on her silky chemise and brushed her teeth before brushing out her hair and washing off her make-up. Emme had gone to pack her Garfield pyjamas, but Lucy had stopped her by reminding her that the perp needed to believe they were newlyweds and a newly-wed would not wear Garfield pyjamas. So, she had packed the chemise instead. The pale mint green chemise barely touched the tops of her thighs, while the lace at her breasts did nothing to hide her nipples from view. It didn’t matter though, nobody would see it anyway.

Slipping between the crisp sheets, Emme wondered if Will would be able to track any interest in their social media posts. Shane had used the hashtag military so hopefully it would work.

She had just fallen asleep when her bedroom door opened. She shot up in bed, her hand going for the gun beside her.

“Emme, it’s me,” Shane growled as she pointed the gun at him.

“What are you doing?” she asked, sleep making her confusion apparent. She could feel her heart hammering in her chest at being woken so suddenly.

“I’m coming to bed,” he said sarcastically.

“In here?” she asked incredulously.

“Well, yes. You’re meant to be my wife, and husband and wives sleep together.”

“But we aren’t really husband and wife.” She heard a rustle of clothes and imagined him stripping down.

He sighed and then as if explaining to a child continued, “No, but we need to keep up appearances and we don’t know who may be watching.”

He was right, but she hadn’t thought about that, it was a rookie error on her part. She felt the sheet lift beside her and then the bed sink as he got in. Fresh air hit her ass cheek and she remembered that she was only wearing the thin, almost non-existent chemise.

“Fine, keep to your side.”

He turned onto his side away from her, and she saw the shadow of several tattoos that marked his muscled back. She swallowed hard and pressed her legs together as a wave of lust hit her.

“Don’t worry, Princess. Your virtue is safe with me. I have no interest in you,” he replied.

She felt hurt prickle her at his words. She knew he didn’t want her, but he didn’t have to be a jerk about it.

“Good,” she said instead. As she tried to ignore the soft sound of his breathing and the heat from his skin, she wondered how she would get through the next week in one piece if just the sight of his back made her wet for him.
