He looked around hating being exposed. “We need to find somewhere to stay.” They had dumped most of their weapons before they hit the village only carrying their knives and one handgun each.

“I know a place,” she said and started walking towards a café that was brimming with warm light and laughter.

Alex had no choice but to follow her. She moved with confidence and grace he didn’t remember from their younger years. Evelyn had always been petite and still was but now she moved like a sleek cat. Even in the thick ski jacket she was attracting the attention of men around her.

Her codename of Siren suited her because without a word she called to a man. The sway of her hips, the flick of her hair, and she had him under her spell and only some of it was contrived, the rest was due to the woman she had become.

Slipping into the back of the café, Evelyn moved through the kitchen as if she was expected with barely a person stopping except to smile at her. Going through a door at the back he found they were in a small hallway with stairs leading up to a locked painted blue door.

“What is this?”

Evelyn took a key from under the ledge on a storage heater. “A friend owns it. They’re out of town and won’t mind us staying here.”

Alex stiffened again as jealousy swam through his blood like a shark seeking prey. “Are you sure he won’t mind your ex staying here?” His tone was brittle and snappy.

Evelyn turned her head to look at him as she put her foot on the bottom step her eyebrow quirked in question her lip twitching. “Are you jealous, Alex?” Incredulous amusement moved over her face.

“No,” he denied vehemently even though he recognised that was exactly what he was.

“Oh my God. You are jealous. You can lie to yourself but not to me, Alex Martinez.” She laughed as she slid the key in the lock and opened the door.

“I am not lying.” Alex slipped an arm around her waist and pulled her around so he could see her pretty face. Her smile threatened his composure, and at that moment, he didn’t care who this place belonged to—he was just happy to have made her smile.

Her laughter filled the apartment and Alex knew he would move heaven and earth to keep that in his life.
