Alex resisted as she tried to pull her hand away and glared at her. “It’s not nothing. Let me clean it up.” He was ready to throw her over his shoulder and drag her to the bathroom if need be.

“Okay, Alex,” she said as if she’d suddenly realised he needed to do this for her.

He looked up over her shoulder at Reid who was watching them intently. “Grab yourself some food or coffee. You know where everything is,” he said as he walked down the hallway towards the bathroom.

“Cheers, man.”

Moving into the bathroom behind Evelyn, Alex closed and locked it. Her eyes went to the lock and then to him. He could see the question in them she hadn’t voiced.

“What’s going on, Alex?” she murmured.

Alex pushed her to sit on the edge of the bath and before kneeling in front of her taking her hands in his. Snagging the first aid kit he began to clean her palms of dirt and tiny bits of grit as he considered what to tell her.

“Alex?”

He looked up at her beautiful familiar face a face that had been with him in his dreams for so long. Now living breathing miracle in his arms. “I want to tell you something, but it stays between us. No telling Roz or anyone else.”

“Okaaaay.”

“Promise me, Evelyn,” he asked as he wrapped the last hand with gauze to keep the cuts clean.

“I promise, Alex.” She lifted her hand to his jaw, his bristles catching the bandage.

“Jack and I think Eidolon has a traitor or mole.” He felt and heard her indrawn breath, the surprise at his words evident.

“Who?”

“That’s just it, we have no idea. The Kirk woman should never have known we were involved in her brother’s takedown. And the meeting today, only Eidolon knew about that meet. So, unless the leak is from Colchester, which wouldn’t make sense, then it’s someone within Eidolon.”

“Wow. I haven’t met them all, but I can’t imagine any of them betraying Jack.”

“I can’t either, but someone is.” He held her gaze, the gravity of the situation apparent to them both.

“What do you need me to do?” she asked readily as she picked up a clean cotton pad and began to clean the blood from his face.

“Nothing. Just stay alert. If we have a traitor in our midst, we need to be aware of every word, every action.”

“Of course,” she said as she finished tending to his cut with some Steri-Strips.

Alex looked at the woman in front of him and felt his body tighten. He had thought he loved her before when they’d had their lives planned out. But now, having lived without her and knowing the empty despair of walking through life in a fog of grief, he loved her more. So much it almost made him weak. Loving her made him vulnerable but it also gave him strength and purpose he knew he couldn’t live without.

Cupping her jaw with his hand he watched her eyes darken with desire as he tilted his head to hers. Their lips touched, and as it always had with Evelyn, his passion for her ignited like a flashbang. His body hardened with the need to consume her and to make her his again. Their tongues rallied as her body relaxed into his, a soft whisper from the back of her throat making his cock twitch. Wrenching his mouth away he rested his forehead against hers.

“You have no idea how much I want you. To feel you beneath me, to see your beauty as you come, to hear my name on your lips again but now isn’t the time.” Regret was etched into every syllable he uttered.

“I know, Alex,” she whispered, the warm breath from her words sending a bolt of desire straight to his semi-hard cock.

Reluctantly Alex stood and with Evelyn following behind him moved back into the living area. Reid was positioned at the island dunking chocolate biscuits in a cup of tea.

“Neanderthal,” Alex said with a shake of his head hoping Reid wasn’t the traitor. But he had a bond with all the team and couldn’t for the life of him see any of them being a traitor. It was that bond that made it so hard to accept one of them was betraying the team.

“Nothing like a good choccie biscuit dunked in tea to ease a concussion,” Reid replied with a smirk.

Alex let out a huff not prepared to get into all the reasons why it was so wrong. “I’m going to get the laptop set up for you guys to get the information off this drive while I call Jack,” he said heading to his bedroom where he kept his laptop.

Entering the living room a couple of minutes later he saw Evelyn pouring them both a cup of coffee and smiled. Loading the machine, he left it on the dining table before grabbing his coffee and calling Jack. This was one conversation he wanted to have in private.

Alex had known Jack would explode when he heard about what happened, and he wasn’t disappointed when Jack answered on the first ring and as expected, hit the roof. “I don’t fucking believe this shit. So, either one of my men is definitely a fucking scum bag traitor, or the Queen of fucking England has a snake in her den. Fucking wonderful.”
