Chapter Nineteen

“Pax,”Evelyn screamed as she moved towards her friend and hugged her.

Pax hugged her back, the small smirk on her face as she leaned down to Evelyn. Pax was 5 feet 9 inches in her bare feet so in the skyscraper high heels she wore she easily reached 5’ feet11.

“How did you get in?” Alex asked as he moved behind Evelyn and wrapped his arms around her waist.

Pax surveyed him, her cool blue eyes assessing. “Well, you’re every bit as delicious as I heard you were.”

Evelyn smiled as Pax neatly ignored his question while Alex raised an eyebrow and Liam snorted a laugh.

Her eyes cut to Liam then, her sharp gaze moving over him until he squirmed before moving on to Gunner and she grinned. “Seems you only left the scraps for me,” she said cuttingly, and Evelyn laughed at the pissed off looks that crossed Liam’s and Gunner’s faces.

“What are you doing here, Pax?” Evelyn linked arms with her and moved to the sofa. As always Pax was immaculate in a navy floral panel dress with three quarter length sleeves. The pencil skirt fitting tight around her curves before hitting just below the knee.

“Well, I got word there was a party on a yacht and you know how I love a party.” Her flippant reply was pure Pax.

“You came to back me up.” Evelyn felt warmth spread through her body and hit her in the chest knowing Zenobi always had her back.

“You didn’t think we would leave your fate to Neanderthals, did you?” An exaggerated eye roll accompanied Pax’s words.

“Hey, watch it. You might be a hot piece of totty with a cracking pair of Bristol’s but saying we can’t look after Evelyn is not gonna fly here. So, wind it in.” Liam glared at Pax, his cockney roots showing in the face of the insult she had delivered.

Pax looked at her and confusion was plastered on her face before she let out a tinkling laugh. “What in God’s name did he just say?”

“I think you offended him, so he was telling you that while giving you a compliment about your rack.” Evelyn’s face lit with a grin.

“Oh.” Pax turned to Liam. “I apologise. I should not have implied you wouldn’t protect Evelyn.”

Liam nodded.

“Fine. Now that’s sorted can you tell me how the fuck you got past security and walked in here?” Alex asked his hands on his hips.

“No.” Pax’s reply was succinct as she leaned forward to nab a wrap from the tray before standing and facing Alex. Evelyn shrugged at Alex who was now glaring at Pax.

“Bring me up to speed and I’ll tell you how I managed to get us tickets to tomorrow night’s auction though.” She smirked at Alex

“On The Kratos?” Alex immediately felt his body tense.

“Of course,” Pax replied with a head tilt that made her beautiful flaming red hair fall in a wave down her back as she did so.

“How the fuck did you manage that when we only just found out it was on The Kratos?” Alex folded his arms across his chest.

“Like I’m going to tell you that. Tell me, Alex, are you going to tell me how you managed to take out the warehouse full of meth dealers last year?” She straightened to her full height as she faced him, her good humour waning. “Because we both know that it had only been set up a few days prior and nobody should have known about its location. Yet you did. Care to share?” She waited silently as Alex glared at her, the silence stretching between them.

Evelyn fought the desire to get involved, they needed to work it out on their own. She wanted Alex and Zenobi in her life and had absolutely no intention of acting as the referee every time they butted heads. So much as she wanted to, she let it go although she was quietly pissed with both of them.

“Fine, Pax. Keep your secrets but I won’t have Evelyn’s safety put at risk.”

“I guess we’re on the same page then.” Pax’s smile was huge, and Evelyn could see how pleased she was at having bested Alex, or more importantly someone from Eidolon.

Evelyn looked at the door as Reid and Blake walked in, although walk was the wrong word for that pair. The prowled in like panthers looking for their next meal. Evelyn almost pitied the poor women they had been to see but not quite.

“We have the time, place, and Pax got us tickets. How many tickets?” Alex turned to Pax for an answer.

“Four and aliases to go with them. One for you and Evelyn and one for me and whichever hunk wants to escort me.” She sent a smile in Blake’s direction. Evelyn grinned as Alex rolled his eyes at Blake’s grin.

“Let’s get the details planned. We have a lot to do before tomorrow night.”
