“Tut, tut, Alex. Your training should be better than that.”

How in the fuck does he know my real name and thatI’m trained?

The poisonous worm in his belly twisted as the obvious conclusion came to him. The traitor was on this mission with them. He railed against it, but the evidence was there. He had no time to think about it now, he had to get to Evelyn.

“What do you want?” he asked through gritted teeth as the boat listed to the left.

Out on the night sea boats were swarming as people fled, some even jumping into the water in fear. His eyes barely left Evelyn who was standing statue still. He wondered why she wasn’t fighting back. She was highly trained, he knew she could probably take out that one man, but she wasn’t even attempting too. Something was wrong.

“What I want is for us to take a little trip. You’re going to call your men off and we’re going to leave on that boat.” He motioned to Gunner who was already in their boat.

“He’s never going to let that happen,” Alex sneered thinking perhaps he had been correct about Booth all along.

“He will because if he doesn’t, I will kill Miss Garcia and then have my sniper take him out before I take control of the boat.”

Alex saw in his eyes he would do it. The man wasn’t insane though—just fucking evil.

Alex was going to enjoy killing him. “Fine let’s get this shit over with.” Alex started to move towards the steps feeling Simon behind him.

“This is Shadow. I need everybody to stand down. The Joker,” he said and took great joy in hearing the angry hiss of breath from Booth when he realised it was him, “has Evelyn and will kill her if anyone makes a move. Follow protocol.” Protocol was to head back to base and get fucking planning. “Viking, we’re headed your way.”

Alex moved down the steps his hands out in front so as not to freak Booth.

“Through the galley,” he said pushing him in the back with the barrel of the gun.

“I’m gonna shove that gun so far up your ass if you don’t stop pushing me.” Alex’s tone was almost conversational.

“I don’t think you’re in a position to give me orders.”

Alex agreed but he would be and then the fun would begin but not for Booth. Oh no, his days on this earth were over. The second he’d made Evelyn a target he’d signed his own death warrant.

They approached the main deck and were met by two guards who cuffed him with cable ties before grabbing an arm and manhandling him towards the boat as Gunner watched. His face was a mask of calm, but Alex could almost feel the barely checked fury in him. Not a lot of people knew but Gunner had some serious anger issues when he was younger. He had learned to control them years ago but if the way his jaw was working was any indication then he could blow and allow the rage to be set free. Alex made eye contact trying to communicate with him to calm the fuck down. He didn’t need to deal with him while worrying about Evelyn.

They got him on the boat and secured him by tying his ankles together, leaving one guard to hold a weapon on Gunner. The ship dipped as Booth stepped on board and nodded to the guard. Alex had a gut-clenching second where he knew what was going to happen but could do absolutely nothing about it as the guard pulled the trigger and red bloomed. Shock crossed Gunner’s face before he fell backwards into the water.

“Let’s go.”

Alex lay still trying to not to let sadness overtake him as he worked on a plan to get away and help Evelyn. But until he knew where they were going all he could do was wait and watch and conserve his energy. The image of Evelyn wet and bedraggled, still looking stunningly beautiful as she stood silent and still on the boat, came to him. He tried to figure out what was wrong with the image, he couldn’t help thinking she blamed him for something.
