“He’s dead.”
“Really? How?”
“I killed him.” He seemed to pause as he waited for her reaction. “He would never have given up and I won’t have you living under a cloud of fear, constantly watching your back.”
“You killed him for me.” She stroked a finger over his chest as he kissed her head.
“I would tear down the world for you, Evelyn.”
“Who said romance was dead.” The familiar voice from the door made her look up with a grin.
“Lucy!” Evelyn exclaimed with a happy smile.
Lucy walked in with Jace behind her. She and Lucy were similar in looks and had worked many jobs together before Luce went to work for Fortis.
“What are you doing here?” she asked as Lucy moved to hug and kiss her as she sat up slowly.
“Heard you had some trouble and your man here needed back up. Couldn’t let these guys have all the fun.”
Jace moved in and kissed her cheek. “Good to see you, Evelyn. Sorry about the circumstances though.”
“So, you flew out to help rescue me?” she said feeling the love from everyone around her.
Lucy smiled. “Not just us. Daniel, Roz, and Kanan did too.”
“Roz is here?”
“She is but she doesn’t want to see you. She has some major guilt going on.”
Evelyn felt Alex’s arms tighten around her at Lucy’s words before he sighed. “I haven’t got to that bit yet.”
Lucy formed a perfect O with her mouth and then rolled her lips into her teeth looking awkward.
“How about we go, and you can do that.” Jace took Lucy’s hand and pulled her towards the door.
“I’ll see you soon. You’ll come to the wedding, right?” Lucy asked them both.
“Hell, yes. Try and stop us.”
Her friend was radiant, so in love with her fiancé, the man she had pined over for years before he got his act together.
She waited a beat after the door closed before she spoke. “Roz knew, didn’t she? About David being Osiris?”
“Yes, she did.”
“Is that why you and Pax fell out before we left?”
“Yeah, she just hit me with it, and I had to lie to you. I hated it but I didn’t want to compromise the mission as it was our only way to clear your name and get the target off your back.”
She could hear the guilt and the anger in his voice. “It’s okay, Alex. I would have done the same, and she put you in an awkward position which we will have to talk about, but I don’t blame you. All you’ve done since this began is protect me and I love you for it.” Emotion in every word
“I love you too, Evelyn.” There was a comfortable silence as they both realised that for the first time since they had been reunited, they were free to move on with their lives.
“So, what now?” she asked feeling like a scared child.
“Now we live our life together wherever you want that to be. I finally put a wedding ring on your finger, a baby in your belly, and we grow old loving each other.”
“Was that a proposal?” Her heart started to beat faster.
