“Why? Talk me through your reasoning, help me understand.”

Omega spent the next twenty minutes talking him through the process of cutting and editing clips of video and showed him examples. “If this is fake, then the person who did it deserves a damn Oscar.”

Hawk was back at his computer typing up his reports when an email pinged through.

“Got the recording the killer sent into the news station.”

Clay started to pace the adrenaline firing his blood. “Play it.”

The room was deathly silent as they listened.

“They all deserve to die. Hand over the nurse and nobody else gets killed.”

Clay rolled his hand in the air. “Again.”

Omega played it over and over, as they listened for even the slightest clue.

“Do we have a recording of Malone?”

“Yes, give me a second.” Omega typed quickly, bringing up what they needed and played it.

They listened twice over. “It could be him, but I think we need to run it through voice recognition and see if it matches.”

“Do it. I want everyone looking for Malone. Nobody goes home until we find this mother fucker,” Clay bit out the words knowing his team were as invested as he was in this case, maybe not as invested, but damn close.

Hawk clapped him on the shoulder. “We’ll find him, Condor. He targeted your girl, so he targeted us. We’ve got your back.”

“Thanks, it means a lot.”

“No problem, and for the record, it’s as much about Hattie’s baking as us supporting you.” Hawk grinned and Clay shook his head.

Hattie had indeed sent in some cookies and cakes for the team when they worked late which had gone a long way to making his friends love her almost as much as he did. Clay frowned as he turned back to the task at hand. He had to find Malone; he was the key.

Cruz walked in with Dax shortly after and they formed a plan. Dax would go with Hawk and interview Stephanie Clark again. Find out if she had seen or heard from her ex-husband.

“You think he’s our killer?” Cruz was leaning against the desk where Clay was working, arms folded.

“He fits the profile.”

“Yeah, but what about your gut? We both know this job involves a certain amount of instinct.”

Clay leaned back and looked at Cruz, considering his question. “Honestly, I think he can unlock the missing piece to this case but whether he’s the killer or knows who is, I don’t know.”

Cruz nodded but kept quiet, getting back to work.

Clay couldn’t focus though. Something was niggling at him and he didn’t know what it was, just that it was important and the life of the woman he loved hinged on it.
