He glared at her like it was her fault and she saw the edge of his anger turning toward her son. “Why is he being like this?”

“He’s hungry. Do you remember what you were like when we were kids and needed food? I once saw you eat three burgers in ten minutes because you were so hungry.”

Harlan cocked his head and smiled. “He is like me.”

He moved toward her and handed Jude to her. The warm weight of his body in her arms, instantly settled her racing nerves. With Harlan watching intently she ignored the way he looked at her breast as her son latched on and instantly fed, his suckling and mewling the only sound in the room.

“It’s so beautiful to see you like this. I dreamed of this so many times, Rosie. I knew you’d come around in the end.”

Rose just nodded not wanting to confirm his madness but not wanting to upset him when his mood was so unstable.

“I have food for us but only sandwiches and such as we don’t have power yet.”

She’d noticed the chill in the room but hadn’t said anything. She suspected this house belonged to someone else, but Harlan had bought into his own fantasy and had never even spoken to the agent.

“After Jude is fed, I’ll make you some lunch and we can rest for a while. I’ve waited so long to make you mine, Rosie. I can’t wait a minute longer. Jude can sleep while we make love.”

Rose choked down the panic at his words, trying to think of a way out of the situation. If he touched her, she’d puke but she knew the alternative was putting her son in jeopardy.

“I don’t know if it’s safe to do so yet.”

Harlan quirked a brow and grinned. “Silly Billy, you had your checks and they are all fine. Are you playing hard to get, Rosie? Because the time for games is over. Don’t make me hurt our son because of your jokes.”

Rose gave a fake laugh. “Oh, yes, I forgot. Sorry. I’ve been forgetful lately.”

Harlan looked at his lap where he sat beside her. “I have a confession.” His eyes held hers as he looked up. “That was me. I had a key made to your place and I’d move and hide things just for fun.”

Rose had no answer to that but relief that at least she wasn’t losing her mind. She felt violated but pushed the feeling away. Right now her focus had to be on keeping herself and her son safe and she could examine and deal with Harlan’s betrayal later. She prayed Aide knew she was missing by now and was looking for her, because she wasn’t sure she could do this alone.
