“You didn’t drag me anywhere. We’re friends, remember? It’s what friends do.”
He pulled her into his arms and kissed her head as he held her tight, and she wished beyond anything else that this moment was real. That he felt something more for her, that they were just another normal couple having a meal together and relaxing.
Pulling herself together, she pasted a smile on her face and put some distance between them.
“You promised to amaze me with your cooking skills.”
“I did, didn’t I.”
He took her hand and led her to the kitchen with a smirk on his face and a more relaxed manner as if whatever had been bothering him earlier was gone.
And amazed she was when an hour later they were seated at his dining table which, as with the rest of the house, looked like it came straight from a home décor magazine.
Savannah sat back and patted her full tummy. “That was amazing, Mark.”
“I’m glad you enjoyed it.”
She had, far too much for her own good. Mark was fun and interesting, and they talked about so many things. His job, her job, the friends they had, her family, politics, movies, music but he never once mentioned his own family. There was a story there she knew, and the name Milo kept going over and over in her head, but she never had the courage to bring it up. Something inside her knew that he’d close the door firmly in her face at this point if she did.
Mark held a pain deep inside him that he shared with nobody, and it was linked to that name and his family. Her heart ached to soothe his pain and learn more about him and his past, but they weren’t that. They were fuck buddies and it felt too intimate to bring up, and coward that she was, she didn’t want to tempt him into bringing his walls down when they were just beginning to lift, showing her a glimpse of the man she wasn’t only sleeping with, but falling for.
