“No, it was clear the officials had been paid off. That’s why I ended up locked up for it when I was innocent. I had an alibi and I was still convicted.”

“Do we have any way of testing to find out for sure?”

He nodded. “Yes, me.”

“You really think it’s possible?”

“I think every option needs to be explored at this stage, no matter how obscure it might seem.”

“Fine, but let’s call Lopez and see where he’s at with everything.”

His phone buzzed and she held her breath waiting for the next blow, but he smiled and it transformed him from handsome to devastating.

“Everything okay?”

He looked up and grinned, his eyes twinkling. “Yes, the team are here.”

“Now that’s great news.”

He smiled again and she laughed. “You know I used to wish you’d smile more but now I’m not so sure.”

His brow furrowed as he started the car and reversed before pulling out. “Why?”

Her left brow lifted. “Because I don’t want other women seeing how dangerously gorgeous you are and coming after you.”

His laugh was loud and deep and mended something she didn’t know was broken inside her chest.

“Jealous, baby?”

“Hell yes.” She waved her hand at him up and down. “I worked hard for this and nobody else is taking it from me.”

“Okay, mo chroí. I’ll save all my smiles for you.”

“I don’t need them all, just like ninety percent or something. You can hand the rest out for good behaviour to those who earned them.”

He chuckled again. “I like this side of you. It’s sexy.”

“Yeah, well, when we get home, you can show me.”

“Baby, when we get home, I’m taking you somewhere where it’s just me and you for two entire weeks and we’re not getting out of bed.”

“Not even for food?”

“Okay, I’ll feed you, but only because you’re going to need the energy for what I have planned.”

“I like the sound of that. Can it be warm? I miss the warmth on my skin.”

“We could go to Italy. You can show me your home.”

Her eyes flashed to his in surprise. “You want to meet my parents?”

“Of course. I want to meet the grandparents of our future children.”

“Oh, we’re having children now?”

“Don’t you want them?”

“Yes, I do. I just never thought you would.”
