Ezra lowered his hands. “You have it.”
Sahara drew in a breath and let her power flow in a careful spread, like hands smoothing cracked clay.
The glyphs shifted under her influence, lines refining, connections strengthening. The structure adjusted, responding to intention instead of force.
The entity pressed closer, voice quieter now. “I was buried far from my sky. Far from my name. If I must remain, let me remain as myself.”
Sahara’s throat tightened. She opened her eyes. “I won’t release you. But I won’t erase you either.”
The chamber shuddered.
Ezra placed his hand on the stone beside hers, his magic threading into the work without overtaking it. A second anchor. A reinforcement. Support, not direction. Sahara directed the obelisk into the circle, floating it gently. Almost reverently.
The prison flared, bright and clean.
Grief washed over Sahara. She gasped, shoulders trembling as the weight of the world pressed through her.
Ezra leaned closer. “I’ve got you.”
Together, they held the seal. The glyphs settled, no longer straining. The pressure eased. The chamber exhaled.
The voice came once more, faint but steady. “Then remember.”
Sahara bowed her head. “I will.”
Silence followed.
Sahara sat back hard, dizziness rolling through her. The room tilted.
Ezra caught her immediately, his arms firm around her shoulders.
“I’m okay,” she said weakly.
He smiled into her hair. “You’re upright—sort of. That’s a start.”
She laughed once, breathless, and then she was crying, exhaustion spilling out now that the work was done.
Ezra tilted her face up, his hand warm against her jaw.
“You did it,” he said softly. “You held it without losing yourself.”
“You stood with me.”
“I stayed where you could sense me.”
She kissed him because she needed him like oxygen. Because the world was still solid and he was proof of it. The kiss was slow, anchoring, and private. A returned promise rather than a leap into nowhere.
When they parted, foreheads resting together, neither of them spoke the word waiting nearby. Love. They didn’t need it yet.
Above them, the desert kept their secrets. Below, the prison held.
And Sahara, finally, was safe.
The chamber let them go. The air simply loosened, the pressure easing until stone felt like stone again and magic receded to a low, steady hum beneath Sahara’s skin.
She rose slowly, legs stiff, balance questionable. Ezra waited, watching her closely without crowding. When she reached for him, he was already there, hand open, steady.
Their fingers laced.
