I didn’t know he was going to be sweet about it. I thought maybe he’d just chuck a ring at me and tell me to meet him at the bank. I didn’t know he was going to do a real proposal, that he’d say something nice like “do me the honor.”
My face feels hot, and he’s waiting for my response. He already knows it’s yes. I’m the one who came here to tell him to hurry it up on the financing.
But like always, Tyler waits.
I squeeze his hand and nod with a broad smile. “Yes. And I think the honor is mine.”
Tyler looks awkward. “Do you think I put the ring on while I’m down here?”
I laugh and tug on his arms. “I honestly don’t know. But get up so I can give you a hug.”
Tyler stands and I slide my arms around his waist. He returns my hug, wrapping himself securely around me.
“We’ve lost our minds, haven’t we?” he asks.
“Probably so, but at least we’re going all in on it.”
He chuckles, the sound warm against my ear. “I think that’s how you do everything, Reba.”
I step back and together we watch him slide the ring onto my finger. His permafrown returns. “Sorry I got the smaller stone.”
“No, no,” I wave him off, noting how my now-heavier left hand catches the gray fall morning light. “You’re right. If we went too big, it’d be unbelievable.” I hesitate. “Thanks for being willing to speed up the timeline.”
Tyler shakes his head and purses his lips. “What’s the point of doing it at all if we don’t do it when we need it? We need to find out if it’s even worth all the noise.”
I smirk at him. “Noise?”
He chuckles and steers me toward the stairs. “If you think our families won’t completely lose their shit over this, I think you’re in for a surprise. I’ll be down in a second. I’m just going to change so I look worthy of a loan.”
I struggle going down the steps, my knees almost knocking.
For the moment, I’m engaged.
TWENTY-FIVE
TYLER
Becca Martin’s hand is in mine, and my ring is on her finger.
I put on some slacks, a button-down, and my better boots. I told Dad I needed the morning to take care of some stuff and he sent me on my way.
Becca’s hand is so cold when it slips into my sweaty one that I put my other hand on it and blow warmth into it. “You’re freezing.”
Becca grins over at me. “You know what they say. Cold hands, warm heart.”
We walk the block or so to the bank in Paint, and I have to resist the temptation to swing our hands between us. It feels way too good having her attached to me like this. But I can’t get swept away. There’s a chance this is the end of this harebrained idea. “Did you make an appointment?”
“Pfft. An appointment? In this place? I got us covered. Follow my lead.”
She tows me into the bank by my hand, waving to the teller, some girl who went to high school around when we did.
“Well, I never thought I’d see this combination!” She points between the two of us, and I feel bad that I couldn’t remember her name if I tried.
“Oh, him? Yeah, he’s okay,” Becca says with a sneaky wink my way. “Hey, is Jim busy? I wanted to ask him about something. I’ve been bugging him a lot lately,” Becca says, tossing a hand. I have to admit, her ring sparkles so much in the lighting in here that you really can’t tell it’s fake. At least I can’t.
“No, go on in there. Jim, Becca’s here to see you again!” she calls out.
Becca pulls out that killer smile and the desire to shove her in the vault and kiss it off her face is overwhelming. I’m a greedy bastard and want that smile just for me. She pokes her head around the corner into Jim’s office. “I’ve got big news!”
