CAELRIC
The dining hall fills with the familiar chaos of evening, mage-lights floating lazily overhead as my family filters in from their various pursuits. Mother already sits at the head of the table, her midnight blue gown pristine despite having spent the afternoon managing household affairs.
"Caelric, dear, tell me you haven't been brooding in your study all day." Her violet eyes sparkle with gentle amusement as I take my seat.
"I prefer 'contemplating' to brooding."
"Same thing." Aurelia sweeps in wearing sapphire silk, her hair catching the magical light. "Though I have far more interesting news than whatever dusty political treatises you've been reading."
She settles gracefully into her chair as the zagfer servants activate the warming stones beneath the serving platters with soft command words. Steam rises from the roasted fowl and seasoned vegetables.
"Please tell me it's not another scandal involving Lord Korrath's gambling debts." Nerina enters with her usual ethereal grace, though her expression suggests resignation rather than anticipation.
"Better. Lady Velandra was caught in Lord Thane's private gardens at midnight. Fully clothed, unfortunately, but the implications—"
"Are probably overblown." Nikolai's warm laughter precedes him into the room. "You know how servants love to embellish."
"Says the man who still expects to be treated like family despite being technically a cousin." Aurelia's teasing smile takes any sting from the words.
"Technically? I've lived here since I was twelve. Seralyth practically raised me."
Mother's expression softens as she regards Nikolai. "You are family, dear. Blood or otherwise."
A book crashes to the floor somewhere behind us. Asterion appears in the doorway, his untidy platinum hair suggesting he's been running his hands through it while reading. Three more volumes float behind him, organizing themselves into neat stacks on the nearby sideboard.
"The succession laws of House Draven make absolutely no sense." He slides into his seat without looking up from the tome in his hands. "Either the scribes were incompetent or someone deliberately—"
"Asterion." Mother's voice carries gentle authority. "Books down during dinner."
He blinks those unusual blue-violet eyes, seeming to notice the rest of us for the first time. "Right. Family time."
The book closes with obvious reluctance.
"Another marriage proposal arrived today." Nerina's quiet announcement draws everyone's attention. "From House Malvern."
"The one with the son who collects butterfly wings?" Aurelia wrinkles her nose. "Surely we can do better."
"We can do whatever makes Nerina happy." Mother's tone brooks no argument.
A hairline crack shimmers in her goblet as she reaches for it. Without pause, she traces her finger along the flaw, and the crystal melds seamlessly back together.
Heavy footsteps announce Emeric's arrival. He wears simple dark clothing that does nothing to hide his imposing frame or the fresh bruise along his jaw.
"And where have you beed?" I ask, knowing full well that he's been to the slums fighting in the arena again—something our parents greatly despise.
"Research." His crimson eyes hold mine steadily. "Someone has to understand how the common folk think."
Aunt Nythessa glides in behind him, her black diamonds reflecting the mage-light. She settles beside Aurelia with the kind of elegance that seems bred through generations.
"What else are the nobles whispering about, dear?" Mother asks Aurelia, who brightens at the invitation to share gossip.
The warmth surrounding our table feels almost tangible—laughter mixing with gentle arguments, magic woven casually through conversation, genuine affection flowing between us all.
This is what makes House Vaerith different.
Father's presence shifts the entire dynamic before he even speaks. The measured cadence of his footsteps announces his arrival, and conversations naturally pause as Lord Maltheris Vaerith enters our dining hall.
