I had met Alton a few weeks ago on the set of a luxury cologne commercial Derez had booked for me long before he decided to fire me.
Baby, Alton was a tall, chiseled, chocolate Greek god of a man. Waves, tattoos, hazel eyes, nice lips, big feet, and a thuggish, ruggish demeanor. And did I mention he was carrying?
We flirted a little and exchanged numbers after filming, but nothing happened between us until recently.
Alton was younger and finer. And unlike Ozy, he didn’t have a secret baby mama, a year-old child nobody knew about, or a nephew he expected me to help raise. I had spent all that time smiling in King’s face and pretending I wanted to be some type of mother figure to him when, truthfully, I didn’t. But King was part of the package that came with Ozy, so I played the role because I loved him.
A whole lot of good that did me.
Let Ozy play house with Noree, that baby, and King while I moved on with somebody better. Once the blogs found out about me and Alton, nobody would care about their little interview anymore.
I glanced at the shattered phone one more time before stepping over it.
Ozy thought I was delusional now?
Okay.
I was going to show him better than I could tell him.
Ihad spent most of the morning sitting through back-to-back meetings. The first was with my lawyer about filing for full custody of Summer. The second was with my security team about how the fuck Paisley had managed to get past them with a gun. Then I had one last meeting with an important client that ran longer than expected.
By the time I finally left the office, it was close to eleven. I was ready to pick Summer up from Ozy’s house and head home.
I was in the back of the truck responding to a few emails when Nourah’s name appeared across my screen.
NOURAH: I’ve been thinking about everything. If the offer still stands, I’m ready to hear you out.
My eyebrows rose.
After the way she had shut me down yesterday, I was surprised as hell to see her name, let alone a message saying she wanted to talk. I read it twice.
Before changing my plans, I called Unc to check on Summer. He told me she and King were having a good time and that she had already started begging to stay another night. I spoke to her for a few minutes, and once she promised to behave, I agreed to let her stay.
That freed up the rest of my day.
ME: Say less. I can pick you up in an hour.
A little over an hour later, Nourah and I stood in line waiting to order our food. She went first.
“Can I have the smothered pork chops with white rice and gravy, black-eyed peas, and a large lemonade?”
The clerk entered her order before looking at me.
“Matter of fact, let me get the same thing,” I said. “But instead of a regular lemonade, I’ll take a strawberry lemonade.”
Once she gave me the total, I pulled a hundred-dollar bill from my wallet and handed it to her.
“Keep the change.”
Her eyes widened before a smile spread across her face. “Thank you so much.”
“You’re welcome.”
Nourah and I stepped to the side where everyone else was waiting for their food. It didn’t take long for me to notice a few people looking in our direction. Some of them were whispering and snickering, while others held up their phones like they were trying to record us without making it obvious.
Nourah looked around before glancing at me with a confused expression. Then a smile slowly spread across her face.
“Oh, looks like they’re looking at you.”
