Then Fiona walked into my life.
Now I understood why logic had never mattered much in those stories.
I knew what I wanted.
She was seventeen and had no fucking idea what I’d decided, which meant what I wanted could wait.
For the first time in thirty-one years, I was going to have to learn how.
I pulled out of the school parking lot and headed toward the resort.
Behind me, Joseph Higgins was probably reconsidering every decision he’d made in the last twenty-four hours.
Good.
As for Fiona, she didn’t need to reconsider anything.
She had school, graduation, college, and an entire life in front of her. She deserved the chance to discover who she was without some older man stepping in and deciding it for her.
I could give her that.
At least, I thought I could.
The road curved through the mountains, and I opened the throttle.
The La Croix curse had made its choice.
Fiona had no idea.
For now, that was probably for the best.
CHAPTER ONE
Fiona
If I didn’t hurry, I’d be late.
Again.
I grabbed my books and climbed into my car after saying a quick goodbye and ‘I love you’ to Granny as I dashed out the door, ignoring her complaints about me not eating breakfast. I didn’t have time for breakfast because I’d overslept.
Again.
And why had I overslept? Because I’d been dreaming about him.
Again!
Ever since we’d come home from New Orleans, one man had haunted my dreams.
Jasper Francis Alexander DuBois.
Romeo.
I couldn’t stop thinking about him, dreaming about him. Fantasizing about him. I might only be eighteen, but I wasn’t innocent. I wasn’t a virgin. Hell, I’d given birth to a child.
A child who was now being raised by my adopted brother, Frank, and his wife, Claudia. I’d chosen Claudia because of who she was, not who she was married to. In fact, she wasn’t married to Frank when I chose her as my baby’s mother.
They weren’t even a couple yet.
