“Let’s talk, my office,” he suggested. “Monique, you too.”
They followed him into his office, where Gabriel closed the door. His hair was tied back in a low ponytail, and his scar that stretched from his eye to his chin seemed to throb.
“Any news?” Grayson asked.
Gabriel shook his head. “Your mothers are at the Woodford residence, and we have five bodyguards protecting them. William should be healed soon too, and I just got a hold of Patrick. He’ll swing by your house first to check in with Delilah, and then he’ll come back to HQ.”
Grayson nodded. “Good. We need every hybrid we can get. The full-blooded vampires have limited mobility until tonight. We need to call every hybrid to come to HQ.”
“I figured you’d say that. I’ve already sent an alert to their cell phones.”
“Thanks.”
“Something else,” Gabriel started, then looked straight at Monique. “Given that the attack was at the rental house, I believe that your father was the primary target. If somebody wanted to kidnap Samson, there would have been easier locations where to do that.”
Monique took a breath. “You think it was one of my father’s enemies.”
“Makes sense,” Grayson interjected. “Do you know anybody who’d fit that bill?”
Monique shook her head. “Dad didn’t exactly involve me in the day-to-day running of the kingdom. Maybe David or Zach know more. But they’re skiing in Switzerland. I still haven’t been able to reach them.”
“Try them again now,” Grayson suggested.
Monique pulled out her cell phone and tapped on a contact. The call went straight to voicemail. She disconnected it, and made a second call, this one to Zach. It too went to voicemail.
“Either they’re still out of cell tower range, or something happened to them.”
Grayson looked into Monique’s eyes and saw the worry there. “Let’s see if Thomas and Eddie can ping their last-known location.”
“Okay.”
“Give the numbers to Thomas, and he’ll take care of it,” Grayson said.
Monique left the office. When the door closed behind her, Grayson turned back to Gabriel.
“I didn’t want to say this in front of Monique,” Grayson said, “but if Cain was the target, then David and Zach might be in danger too.”
“I figured that too. Same goes for Monique. She should stay at your parents’ house, so they can all be protected together. Her mother needs her now.”
Grayson scoffed. “Yeah, good luck telling her that. I already tried that, and she shot me down. She wants to be involved in the rescue efforts. And frankly, I don’t blame her.”
Gabriel raised his eyebrows.
“I’ll make sure she won’t leave my side.”
And not just so that whoever kidnapped their fathers wouldn’t get a chance to hurt Monique.
“Fine. But we need to do something about her brothers. They don’t even know yet what happened. And it bothers me that we can’t get a hold of them.”
“Me too.”
“We might have to send a jet from the New York office to bring them home, once we figure out where exactly they are.”
“That’ll take too long. For all we know, they’re under attack too.”
“Then what?”
“I have an idea,” Grayson said. He pulled out his cell phone, and selected a number. It rang once, then the call was answered. “Wesley?”
