Jay contacted Yankee, giving him a brief update about his search for Smith and how Olivia was helping him, so the guys at the mansion wouldn’t get worried if they didn’t get word from him for a few hours. It was close to midnight when Jay heard a sound at the door. Somebody was using a keycard to unlock it. He jumped up from the bed, where he’d been lounging while looking through the photos that Olivia had sent to the cloud over the last few hours. Remaining quiet, he pressed himself against a wall, where he couldn’t be seen by the person opening the door.
The door opened, then fell shut a few seconds later, when the person entering reached his field of vision.
“Jay?”
Jay let out a breath and moved.
Olivia gasped and pressed her hand to her chest. “You startled me.”
“Sorry,” he said. “Old habits die hard.”
“Did you get all the photos?”
He nodded.
“And? Is Smith among them?”
“I’m afraid not. Are you sure you got a photo of every man fitting his description?”
“Everybody who was there, yes. This was all for nothing?” She plopped down on the bed and pulled off her shoes. “My feet are killing me.”
Jay crouched down to her feet. “I’m sorry that it was a bust.” He took one foot into his hand and began massaging it. “I’m grateful for what you’ve done for me.”
“Oh, that feels good,” she murmured.
“Just relax now. You deserve it.”
She dropped her head toward his. “You know what would really relax me?”
“What’s that?”
She kissed him below his ear, then whispered, “You making love to me.”
Jay let out a breath. He wanted nothing more than to feel Olivia in his arms, his cock buried deep inside her, but his conscience didn’t allow him to act on it, because there was still something he hadn’t confessed.
He rose to his feet and pulled a chair closer. When he sat down on it, Olivia gave him an odd look. “Is something wrong? You don’t want to have sex with me?”
“I want nothing more, but I can’t, because there’s something I haven’t told you yet. And you’re not gonna like it.”
Her breath hitched. “What is it?”
“The night we had sex for the first time, I got up in the middle of the night and installed surveillance equipment in your home, cameras and recording devices.”
Olivia gasped and jumped up. “Oh my God! How could you? You were filming me?”
Jay rose. “I’m sorry. I had no choice. I need to capture Smith when he shows up at your place, because he will. My premonitions are never wrong.”
“So you violated my privacy? You recorded everything I did?”
“I didn’t install any cameras in the bedroom or the bathroom. But yes, I violated your privacy. And you have every right to be angry with me.”
“Angry? You think I’m angry? I’m furious! Why didn’t you tell me about this earlier when you told me about everything else? Why keep this from me?”
He cast his gaze to the floor. “Because despite everything you told me tonight, despite you reassuring me that you didn’t know Smith—”
“Which is the truth!”
