“I’ve gotta get ready for work.” She sighed, contemplating calling in sick, but the mountain of work on her desk would only grow taller if she did.

“Do you still work for that law firm?” He pulled her to him again, nuzzling his face in the crook of her neck.

“No, I’m a staffer for a senator now. So, I’ve gotta go to work.”

“Haven’t the senators already left D.C. for the summer?”

“Not yet, there’s still another week before their session is over.” She grimaced. “I’d better take a shower.”

“Mind if I shower with you?”

She turned her head and noticed his mischievous smirk. “Only if you behave.” Because she remembered only too well what Dylan’s favorite pastime in the shower was.

“I don’t know what you’re referring to,” he said grinning.

She rolled her eyes and pushed back the duvet, before getting out of bed. When she cast a look over her shoulder, she caught Dylan running his eyes over her body, his lips slightly parted, and his eyes turning darker. Damn, that look did something to her. She felt butterflies in her stomach, and was tempted to call in sick after all.

“Well, we’d better take a shower,” he said and rose. “I’ve got somewhere to be too.”

She let her eyes roam over his muscular body. He had even less fat on his body than when they’d been dating. His cock was still semi-erect, and she found herself pulling her lower lip between her teeth, suppressing the urge to toss him backward so he would land on the bed again.

“Woman,” he ground out when he reached her. “If you look at me like that, you’re gonna make us both late.” He gave her a gentle slap on her backside.

Sighing, she walked into the bathroom ahead of him. Moments later, they stood in the shower, and warm water was raining down on them. Like they’d done so many times before, they washed each other. Zara enjoyed his hands on her, and loved exploring his body in this way.

“You must be working out even more than back then,” she remarked, brushing her hands over his abdominal muscles. The ridges that formed a six-pack felt hard, yet his hairless skin was as smooth as velvet.

“I have no choice.” He took a dollop of hair shampoo and massaged it into her hair. “I have to be prepared, should my enemies find me.”

“What will you do if they do?”

“Defend myself.” He shrugged, before he rinsed the foam out of her hair.

“How?” She turned around and looked at him.

He met her gaze. “By whatever means necessary.”

Despite the warm water, she suddenly felt cold. There was a determination in his eyes and his voice that she’d never noticed in him before. Had living on the run turned him into a hard man? She wasn’t sure, because it didn’t fit with the tenderness she’d noticed him display the night before.

Zara decided not to comment on his remark. Instead, she stepped out of the shower and reached for a towel. As she dried off, she glanced at Dylan as he washed his hair and rinsed the foam. The water pearled off his body, and his muscles flexed with every movement. Dry now, she brushed her teeth, while she continued to watch Dylan in the mirror. When he turned around and stepped out of the shower, Zara reached for another fresh towel and handed it to him.

“Do you have a spare toothbrush?”

She pointed to the drawer beneath the sink. “In there.”

“Thanks.” He began to dry himself.

“Will I see you after I get back from work?” she asked. She hadn’t wanted to ask this, because it made her sound needy in her own ears, but the words were out before she could take them back.

“Is it all right if I call you later?” He rubbed his hair dry. “I don’t know how long my meeting will take.”

“Yeah, sure.”

Zara hung her used towel over a towel rack and turned toward the door. Dylan put his hand around her wrist to stop her. She looked over her shoulder.

“Zara, trust me, I won’t disappear again.”

She nodded slowly. “All right.”
