“Chapel! What…” Harris burst into the room, fury dying at the sight of them, then sparking anew. “Are you fucking serious?” He spat.

Metal clicked as Theo buckled his belt, his back to Harris. “What do you want?” he snapped.

“Where to fucking start?” he shouted.

One of Verity’s buttons was missing, but she fastened the rest and hovered near the couch, not wanting to get between the two vampires. Harris looked between her and Theo before his eyes fell to the glasses of whiskey beside her. He laughed.

“I thought you got it,” he said, running a hand through his salt and pepper hair. “I thought I’d finally gotten through, and you’ve ruined everything.”

“And how, exactly, have I done that this time?” Theo asked, arms folded, not bothering to contain his snarl.

“You’ve scared my fucking source off.”

Theo threw his arms out. “How, Harris? I haven’t got a damn clue who your source is.”

“Then why did he say that he’s being asked questions? I haven’t told anyone else! Without up to date files how do we know what’s happening?”

“But we…” Verity cut in.

Harris turned on her. “Don’t you start!” he snapped. “Haven’t you done enough?”

“I…”

“No,” he snapped, and Theo was between them in an instant, not that Harris cared. “How dare you drag Sienna into your mess!”

“I didn’t want…” Verity tried but Harris’s pale face was turning red with rage.

“She,” his voice broke. “She protected you, and you reward her sacrifice by getting drunk and fucking your client.”

“That’s enough,” Theo said, collecting Verity’s bag and escorting her to the door in a wide arc around Harris. “I’ll call you later, once I’ve sorted this out.”

Harris scoffed.

“I’m sorry,” Verity said, lingering at the door.

Harris ignored her and Verity knew no words would help. He wasn’t just mad, he was scared. And Verity really was sorry. Not only for allowing Sienna to take her place, but also for spooking Cecilia. For there was no doubt in her mind.

Cecilia was Harris’s source, and Verity had scared her off.

Chapter Twenty- Nine

“Improper conduct.”

The words blurred as Verity blinked.

Theo didn't call after Harris caught them. She’d messaged when she got back, asking if everything was okay, messaged again before bed but he didn’t reply. It hurt more than she’d admit, especially considering what had happened in his office, but he must have been busy. Not that being busy normally stopped him.

Now she knew why.

“Lord Theodore Chapel has issued a formal complaint due to the improper conduct of Miss Verity Harper… Current client contract is hereby terminated and donor suspended… official tribunal to determine suitability of donor for continued service…”

He’d reported her.

He… he…

He had kissed her! He made the first move! He touched her and kissed her and… oh gods… he bent her over his desk and spanked her so hard she still felt the hum of his hand when she sat down.

Her cheeks burnt with embarrassment. Had she done something wrong?
