“He’ll bleed more.”
“Mara.”
Something in his voice makes me obey.
I lift my hand.
Doc tears Kane’s shirt away from the injury.
“Gunshot entered low on the right side.”
“Exit wound?”
“Not that I can see.”
Kane opens his eyes.
“Still terrible bedside manner?”
Doc doesn’t look at him.
“Save your breath.”
“I’ll take that as a yes.”
“You can take it however you want if you live long enough.”
Doc grabs gauze from the trauma kit Sheriff Tate places beside him.
Kane groans when Doc packs the wound.
“Easy.”
“I am being easy.”
“If this is easy, I’d hate to see you angry.”
“You have.”
Kane’s face loses more color.
I look at Doc.
“He’s going into shock.”
“I know.”
Doc covers Kane with a blanket.
His hands never stop moving.
Neither does his mind.
I can see it in his eyes.
“Where were you shot?” he asks.
“Cellar.”
