“You have Grant’s laugh.”

The humor disappears.

My throat tightens.

“You remember him?”

“Every day.”

“Then why didn’t you help him?”

Kane’s face changes.

Doc looks at me, but he doesn’t stop me.

Grant deserves this question.

So do I.

“You knew he was in danger. You knew Miller changed the mission. You knew the Colonel had men waiting in that valley.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you warn him?”

“I tried.”

“You didn’t try hard enough.”

“No.”

His answer comes without hesitation.

“I didn’t.”

The ambulance stops outside.

Boots pound across the porch.

Kane turns his head toward me.

“Grant found out I was working for the Colonel.”

“You told Hampton you were watching Miller.”

“I was.”

“For the Colonel?”

“At first.”

Doc looks like he wants to wrap both hands around Kane’s throat.

“You were one of them.”

“I was trying to get close enough to identify everyone involved.”

“By helping them?”
