Tate’s expression hardens.

“You think he’s still inside the government.”

“Kane’s scheduled to die in three days. Vance is still protecting him. Yes.”

Mara looks at the Sheriff.

“We can’t trust everyone who arrives.”

“No,” Tate says. “But we can document everything before they do.”

He calls a deputy over.

“Photograph every vehicle, badge, and face that enters this property. I want names checked before anyone crosses the perimeter.”

The deputy nods and moves away.

A firefighter lowers himself through the opening.

Carson looks up at Mara.

“Deputy Ellis?”

“What?”

“I landed on one of them.”

Her expression softens.

“You didn’t know they were there.”

“I broke the container.”

“The floor broke the container.”

“I landed on it.”

“Carson.”

“What?”

“You didn’t do anything wrong.”

He looks toward the remains beside him.

“Somebody did.”

“Yes.”

“And we’re going to find them.”

“Yes.”

He nods.

The firefighter secures a harness around him.

When they lift Carson through the opening, he tries not to cry out.
