“He’d better be.”

Wolf reaches across the console and squeezes my hand once.

“He loves you.”

“I know.”

“And you love him.”

“I know.”

Trigger sighs from the back seat.

“This is beautiful.”

“Put on your seat belt,” Wolf says.

“I’m wearing it.”

“Then tighten it.”

“I feel unwanted.”

I look back at him.

“Colin told you to stay with me.”

“Technically, he told Wolf.”

“Then you can go back.”

“I’m also afraid of him.”

Despite everything, I laugh.

It doesn’t last.

Sheriff Tate’s voice comes over the radio.

“Lieutenant Ross, respond.”

Static.

“Lieutenant Ross, this is Sheriff Tate.”

Nothing.

My pulse climbs.

Tate tries another channel.

“Eagle River station, respond.”

Silence.

“The phone lines are down,” I say.
