Grant

My vision blurs.

Mara makes a broken sound beside me.

I pull her against my chest.

She grips the front of my shirt.

Grant tried to come home.

He fought his way through that valley.

He kept the evidence away from Harlan.

He left a path for us to follow.

And he kept his last promise.

“He saved them,” Mara whispers.

“Yes.”

All twenty-three men will have their names returned.

Their families will learn the truth.

Harlan will stand trial.

Grant did that.

He reached through fifteen years and saved them.

Sheriff Tate gives us a moment before continuing.

“Kane is awake.”

I look up.

“Will he live?”

“Yes.”

“What happens to him?”

“That’s complicated.”

“It always is with Kane.”

“He’ll remain under guard. Federal prosecutors want everything he knows. His role in moving the bodies and hiding evidence will be investigated.”

“He worked for Harlan,” Mara says.

“He did.”

“He also preserved the files.”

“Yes.”
