“There were deputies at both ends.”

“That didn’t stop someone from reaching my truck.”

His voice is low.

Controlled.

Too controlled.

“You’re angry.”

“You think?”

“At me?”

“At whoever put you in that scope.”

“I’m not the sixteen-year-old girl you remember.”

“I noticed.”

Something changes in the space between us.

His gaze moves over my face, pausing on my mouth before returning to my eyes.

My pulse stumbles.

Doc steps away so suddenly that cold air rushes into the space where he stood.

“We should go inside.”

He carries the case into the kitchen without looking back.

Trigger watches him leave, then looks at me.

“Don’t.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You’re about to.”

His expression turns innocent.

“I was only going to mention that Doc hasn’t looked at a woman like that for as long as I’ve known him.”

Heat climbs into my face.

“He was checking my injury.”

“Your injury is above your eyebrow.”

Sheriff Tate returns from the street.

“What are we discussing?”

“Nothing,” I say.

Trigger smiles. “Mara’s head injury.”
