“I’m… I… Oh my God… Zak.” She lets out a moan, and then my reception is muffled.
And that’s all I need because I know she’s gone over the top, and I pump my hips and hands and let go as my orgasm shoots like a geyser onto my belly, and I groan, gritting my teeth to keep it low. Fuck, I wish she was here.
My chest heaving, I gulp in breaths to calm down as my heart pounds fast, clattering harder than it did in tonight’s game with the effort. Fuck. That’s not good.
“Buttercup…you with me?”
“I…let me catch my breath.” She’s struggling to speak, and that brings a grin that stretches my mouth wide. “So, tell me why you called?”
“To check up on you. How’s Mamma?”
She chuckles and takes a few deep breaths. So do I.
“She quit smoking like the doctor ordered, so we had to hide the kitchen knives for fear of our lives.”
“Put her in a bad mood, did it?”
She snorts. “I can handle it.”
“What are you doing tomorrow?”
“I’m busy.”
“Tomorrow night?”
“Still busy.”
“You sure you can’t squeeze me in—so to speak?” I refuse to be discouraged, not after this call.
She groans, and I picture her eye-roll. “I’m going shopping with Suzie to buy some things for the house, and then Mamma’s making us a big dinner.” She pauses and lowers her voice. “I want to spend time with her.”
Shit. “Of course. I get it.”
“Maybe the day after tomorrow.”
“That’ll leave us only a week and two days.”
She laughs. Predictably. “I promise I’ll make it up to you.”
“I have a game that night. Come to it, and we’ll disappear afterward.”
“I’ll go to your little game, but not the executive suite. I’ll blend in better with the regular crowd.”
“How’s your ankle?”
There’s a pause, and my gut sinks. Not a good sign.
She answers me after another beat. “The same. I think I have to make that doctor’s appointment.”
“When? I’ll come with you.”
She laughs again, and I frown at the phone. “What?”
“It’s not like you can help or change the outcome, killer.”
“You’ve never heard of moral support?”
“Suit yourself. I’ll keep you posted.” She pauses again. “But Zak, don’t start thinking like this is a relationship.”
