She opens her mouth in shock, then gathers herself. “I’m not going anywhere with Brad if that’s what you’re thinking.”

“You two looked like—”

“I don’t care what we looked like. He gave me a hug, congratulating me for finishing my novel.”

“That novel of yours sure is a magnet for trouble,” I say, feeling somewhat relieved despite my resolution to let her go in peace. We’re coming to the end of the school year soon anyway, and my team still has the state hockey tournament to win, so I need to focus on that. All good reasons to let go.

She half smiles. And that right there is the one unbeatable reason not to let go so fast. But I prod her to make sure. “I’m surprised Brad hasn’t offered you your job back, with a promotion, after you kicked ass running the Save APA campaign.”

“I wouldn’t take a job working with him if it was the last PR company in New York City. I’d sooner open my own company.”

“There you go.” I smile, but it’s all for her. I can’t hold her back. I have no claim to her in the long run. She wraps her arms around me, careful to avoid the arm in a sling, rests her face against my chest, and holds on. My heart beats strong against her ear, her comfort and warmth speeding it up by the second.

“Oh, how I love your excitability.”

I laugh softly. “That’s one thing about us that never ends, Lollipop. We have the most fucking powerful sexual connection.”

She gives me a funny look, but I sweep her into a kiss with my good arm.

“Let’s go back to the inn for some not-so-forbidden hanky-panky,” I rasp into her mouth, hungry for affirmation that she’s still mine. For now. Until the end of the school year.
