“And I expected better from a doctor,” Clair shot back. “Yet here we are.”

The recorder-bee buzzed overhead. Sendar looked up at it and his ugly smile returned.

“Well, fortunately, your opinions are irrelevant. I already have everything I need. That recorder has captured your husband savaging you like an animal, Doctor Donovan, and I assure you the Kindred High Council will find the footage most enlightening. A Beast/Blood Hybrid infected by his own experimental virus, murdering the colonists of Glenvarren and then assaulting his human wife when she discovered what he’d done—it makes an extremely convincing narrative.”

Clair stared at him. For perhaps two seconds she was too astonished to speak—then she started laughing. Not because anything was funny but because Sendar was apparently even more arrogant than she had realized.

His expression soured.

“What is so amusing?”

Clair wiped at her eyes.

“Oh, you really are a special kind of stupid, aren’t you?”

Sendar’s face tightened.

“Explain yourself.”

Clair pointed at the recorder-bee hovering above them.

“You said that thing has been recording the whole time?”

“Of course.” He nodded.

“Which means it recorded everything you just said about deliberately infecting the Glenvarren colony?”

Sendar’s expression changed slightly.

“Also everything you said about murdering your wife after she discovered the truth,” Kaelus put in.

“And the part where you admitted you injected Kaelus with the Savage Syndrome virus because you wanted to record him killing me?” Clair went on. “And let’s not forget the really charming speech about creating a strain that can’t be cured by veloria so you can wipe out every woman on Titus Four.”

Sendar’s eyes narrowed.

“I was going to edit those things out before I released the recording! I still will—you can’t stop me.”

Clair smiled sweetly.

“Right. Except we already have. Congratulations, Doctor. You just recorded your own confession.”

For the first time since he entered the room, Sendar appeared genuinely alarmed. His gaze snapped toward the hovering recorder-bee. Then he lunged for it.

“Oh no you don’t!” Clair exclaimed.

She didn’t know exactly what possessed her, but she hurled Kaelus’s data tablet straight at Sendar’s head.

It struck him squarely in the temple and Sendar staggered sideways with a curse.

“Clair!” Kaelus barked.

“What?”

“That tablet contains all the evidence!”

“Oh shit! I just got so mad!” she exclaimed.

Luckily, it had survived worse. Well, probably.
