Amy left, closing the door gently. The room held only me. I lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling.

I knew Cedric wouldn't return tonight.

In my past life, he stayed with Victoria all night. Didn't come back until the next morning, saying she was gravely ill and he had to care for her.

This life would be the same.

"Whatever," I murmured. "I'm not expecting him anyway."

My hand pressed against my belly. Still empty. But soon I'd be pregnant. Then I'd take my child and leave forever. I remembered in my past life, it was the third day after our wedding when he finally came to complete the mating ritual. I just had to wait patiently.

I closed my eyes. Drowsiness crept in. Eyelids grew heavy. Consciousness began to blur...

The door opened.

My eyes flew open. Moonlight spilled through the window. I saw a tall figure standing in the doorway.

Dark blue eyes glinting in the darkness.

Cedric!

Chapter Three

Cedric

I stood at Victoria's door, fingers on the handle. Couldn't make myself push it open.

My wolf clawed at my chest, restless. Demanding I leave. Demanding I find our mate.

"No." The word came out harsh. I forced the door open.

Lavender and herbs hit me. Victoria propped herself up in bed, pale as death.

"Cedric, what are you doing here?" She tried to sit up when she saw me.

"Carol said you were bad. Came to check on you. What did the doctor say?" I stopped her from moving and crossed to the bed, keeping my voice gentle.

"I'm fine..." She managed a weak smile before a coughing fit tore through her. Shoulders shaking, hand pressed to her mouth like she'd hack up a lung.

"I'll get the doctor."

"No, Cedric, I don't need—" Another violent cough cut her off. "I'm sorry. I'm so useless, getting sick on such an important day. You left Alice for this—she must be furious. Please apologize to her for me."

"She's not angry." My voice dropped. That was what pissed me off.

Alice wasn't angry. Hadn't shown any displeasure at all. When Victoria's maid Carol burst into the wedding, Alice just looked at me. Calm.

"Go," she'd said. "Victoria needs you."

That tone. That expression. Cold and detached, like she didn't give a damn whether I left or stayed.

"Really?" Surprise flickered in Victoria's voice. She paused, then her tone fell. "Alice must be hurt, just hiding it. If only Arcales were still here. Then I wouldn't keep causing you trouble..."

Arcales.

The name hit like a punch to the chest.

My brother. The person I'd trusted most in this world. Five years ago, he died in the border war with Kavil Pack, protecting the kingdom.
