And, of course, when I looked down at the test, the pink was bleeding through, dripping with clarity.

Pregnant

I guess I’d been delusional.

Somehow I’d thought, of course I couldn’t get pregnant the first month.

After all, plenty of people took years to get pregnant.

I’d been throwing myself into flute practice, avoiding Hayden as much as I could, and ignoring everything else.

But Granger wanted me pregnant, so I was pregnant. Of course, that didn’t mean he wasn’t fucking his wife.

“Good job, Sosie,” he said. “You’re obviously very fertile, looks like it will be no problem to knock you up as much as I want.”

“Now what?”

“Get some rest,” he had the absolute audacity to say. “I’ll see you at dinner—”

But just as he patted my ass and turned me toward the door—the knob turned and Pippa entered the room!

Chapter Twelve

If she hadn’t been staring down at her phone, she’d have seen me immediately, but in a moment Granger had shoved me behind the long draperies and for the moment I was hidden.

“Oh—I didn’t know you were in here!”

“Yeah, got bored.”

Goddamn, you’d never guess from the cool, unbothered tone of his voice, or the way he strode lazily over to meet her, that he was hiding his unwilling mistress in this same room.

“Have you seen Sosie?”

“No, I haven’t. Why?”

“She’s left the performance.”

He shrugged.

“OK. Why ask me?”

But I guess Pippa was a fool for love like I was, but she wasn’t that big of a fool.

“Maybe because you’ve always seemed—I don’t know. Protective of her?”

“I’m not going back and forth about this shit,” Granger said sternly. “You don’t need to be jealous of every woman I talk to.”

“Granger, I just want to know if you’re hiding something from me?” Pippa begged.

I heard the clatter of his cellphone as he slid it across a table to her.

“Go through it if you want. You should be ashamed of yourself.”

Through the curtain I could see her pounce on it eagerly, and Granger grabbed me by the back of my gown and swung me out the window.

I barely repressed a scream.

I was dangling out the window, clearly visible to anyone at the party, and it was only sheer dumb luck that no one was looking up.
