I’d done this dance before. Back when we were friends Pippa had all these promises for how she could use her connections for me, help me with my musical career.

But when Granger came to town, all that melted away.

“I’d really love to see you with Hayden,” she said brightly.

“Why do you care so much?”

“He wants it.”

“All right. And I don’t. So give it a rest.”

“Why not? He’s handsome, rich, he has connections.”

“Maybe I just don’t want a musical career in Oystar Bay if I have to fuck him to get it,” I snapped.

She glared at me.

“How about this? Stay away from my husband.”

Anger pulsed in my veins.

“What are you implying?”

“There’s no need to sit next to him. There’s no need to ever be seen talking to him.”

I pushed my chair out and got up. Knowledge of the baby in my belly seemed to swell out of me.

“I’ve never chased your husband. If he’s sitting next to me, that’s not my doing. So maybe think about that.”

“Sosie, I’m not done with you yet.”

“I’m done, though. Goodbye.”

She stood up, too, so fast the chair was knocked over.

“And if you don’t do what I say—I’m afraid I could make things more difficult for you. So why don’t you just do what I suggest? You always did before.”

“Did you suggest things that were good for you? Or me?” I shot at her.

“Isn’t it the same thing?”

“No. No it isn’t. I know you want to reconnect and go back to being friends again, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.”

“I recommend reconsidering, Sosie. I really do.”

Chapter Thirteen

This time he waited until late at night to break into the guesthouse, the bastard.

“You smell like her,” I snapped as Granger kissed my exposed shoulder, dragging my nightie down over my breasts so they were naked for his predatory lips.

His eyes narrowed and he dragged me closer so I was fully trapped underneath his long, strong body.

“Oh no, songbird. Oh no. We’re not doing this shit on the night we’re going to celebrate your pregnancy.”

“But—"

“I will fuck her exactly as long as I need to. Didn’t I tell you not to worry about it? Didn’t I tell you just because I married one woman didn’t mean I wasn’t going to marry you later? Goddamn woman, a little patience, please.”
