“Of course.” He picked up the bottle and realized his mistake. “I left the cup inside. I can go get it.” He was about to leave when her hand shot out and she took the bottle from him.

“No need. I’m totally capable of drinking right from the bottle.”

His eyes opened wide as she lifted the bottle to her lips, swallowing down some wine. His eyes focused on her sleek neck as she swallowed. Martine was one noblewoman who never ceased to surprise him.

“Your turn,” she said, holding out the bottle.

“You’ve got a drop on your lips.” He reached out to wipe it away with his finger, but the lusty look in her eyes gave him the courage to do something else instead. He leaned over and used his mouth and tongue to lick away the drop of wine.

She moaned and her eyes closed slightly. Putting down the bottle, he reached out and took her hands. “I want you closer,” he whispered, pulling her toward him and she didn’t object.

He took her onto his lap, wrapping his arms protectively around her. She put her arm around his neck and leaned down to kiss him once again.

David liked this too much. If they kept on kissing, he wasn’t sure he’d be able to stop himself from doing more.

“I scare you. Don’t I?” she asked, her face still close to his.

“More than you know.” His gaze dropped when he realized her cleavage was right in front of his mouth since she was sitting on his lap. “I’m afraid we’d better separate, my lady. If not, I am going to want to bury my face in your cleavage. God’s eyes, did I really just say that aloud?”

She giggled, breaking the tension between them.

“I have never known a man like you before.” She smoothed back a lock of his hair behind his ear. An innocent act he supposed, but it felt endearing.

“I have to say I’ve never known a noblewoman like you either.”

“In a good way? Or bad?” she asked.

“I wouldn’t think you had to ask, my lady. After all, we are touching and kissing. To me, that is a good thing.”

“I agree. I think it’s a good thing as well.”

“You were very brave to help birth your sister-by-marriage’s baby,” he told her, liking the way her rounded bottom warmed his lap.

“The baby was breech and I had to help your mother to turn it.”

“Oh, she didn’t tell me that. I have never heard of a noblewoman birthing a baby before.”

“You probably won’t ever again.” She giggled again, her laugh reminding him of the twitter of a small bird. “Or at least I won’t be in a hurry to do it again. Unless it was really necessary, I should say.”

He picked up her hand from her lap, stroking his thumb across the top of it. “You have such soft skin.”

“You have soft lips. That surprised me.”

“Really?” He picked up her hand and gently kissed it, his eyes never leaving her face.

“Yes. I thought all innkeepers were smelly and old and had leathery skin and lips.”

“Now, now, that is such an inaccurate accusation to make.” He chuckled at her words.

“Well, I didn’t know better. Not until now. I mean, didn’t you think nobles were… I don’t know. Haughty?”

“Aren’t they?” he asked, making her frown.

“What?”

“Except for you, my lady. You are the exception.” He gently tapped her lips with the tip of his finger. She opened her mouth and pulled his finger in, using her lush lips and tongue to suck on it, about driving him out of his mind. “I think we’d better go.” He jumped to his feet and put her feet on the ground.

“I’m sorry. That was inappropriate,” she told him. “I’m not sure why I did it, but I can tell you didn’t like it.”
