“Do you know how beautiful you are, Laney? I mean, you’re pretty hot when you have your hair done up and makeup on, but like this? I just, I can’t believe you’re real, woman!”

He took me in his arms at last, and I sank into him, peace sweeping over me as I scoffed at his comments. “I’m dressed in old jeans, a flannel shirt, and I look a mess, Jake.”

“You look real, Laney, you look like a woman that needs to be taken to bed…” His words were low, quiet, and seductive. “You look like I need to fuck you until your cheeks are flushed and you can’t breathe, only scream my name.”

Heat flashed through me. No man had ever been so bold, so graphic, so downright sexy as to say something like that to me, and my knees literally went weak when Jake did it.

“Can we, uh, can we go somewhere Jake? Somewhere private?” I looked around and saw Tony coming down off the roof, and Mrs. Mallory was in the window of her kitchen, grinning at us as she waved happily.

She’d known! All that time I’d talked to her about Jake, she’d known it was her grandson. I’d throttle her later, I decided as Jake stepped away.

“Yeah, let me just get my keys. We can go to my new house.”

“New?” I asked, a bit lost. “Didn’t you just move in here with your grandmother?”

“Yes, but I asked my personal assistant to find me somewhere private, secluded, and out of the spotlight for... well, for times when I needed privacy. It’s a little bit of a drive, but it’s what I wanted.” He looked like he’d bit off something more he wanted to say, but I didn’t push. “I’ll be right back.”

I’d thought about this moment for days now, and somehow, the fates had seen to it to make it all real. I saw him go in and hug his grandmother before he left again, coming back with a coat and a jacket in his hands.

“Look,” he said as he grabbed my hand and pulled me towards the brand new Jeep I’d seen in the driveway. “There are things I want to tell you, things I want to say, but I just can’t right now. Even doing this may cost me dearly, but...”

“We don’t have to do this,” I said as he paused to get into the driver’s seat. “I can wait or whatever you want to do.”

“I haven’t been able to get you out of my head, Laney. I dream about you, I think about you during the day, I wonder what you’re doing at night. And damn, Laney, I’ve wanted you since I first saw you. I want this, but it’s dangerous.”

I understood then, even if he hadn’t told me outright. I understood that Jake must be the rich one. Or a very successful plumber. Or a teacher with a very successful book under his belt. He had a PA, a new house, a new car, and all of this other stuff. Yeah, he had a lot to lose. Billions, maybe.

“Uh, Jake. Are you sure about this?” I didn’t want to be the reason he lost everything he’d worked for; he’d earned whatever he had. I looked at him and saw only the man I was certain I was in love with. A handsome man with soulful eyes and good taste in clothing. And sexy hair and a beautiful mouth I wanted to kiss until I couldn’t kiss him anymore.

“Gran told me it was about time I grew a pair. I have to try to stay within the bounds of that stupid contract, but yeah, I’m certain. Gran says you’re more than worth it, after all.” He started the car and we pulled away.

Jake was a very good driver, and we were soon in a forest of pine trees as he pulled onto a dirt road. He’d been silent as he made the forty-five minute drive, but he’d look over at me and smile at times, and touch me softly, as if he couldn’t believe I was real. I found myself doing the same, and as he pulled into the driveway in front of a single-story cabin clad in cypress I knew this was where I always wanted to be. Wherever Jake was.

“I came over the other day so there’s food and other supplies here now. Let me get a fire going and we’ll have something to eat, shall we?” He waited for me to get out of the car and then we were walking up the steps to a wide front porch that ran along the front.

“It’s a beautiful place, Jake.” I didn’t ask any questions such as ‘did you buy it or are you renting it’ because I knew that would give the game away even more.

Jake pushed the door open and I saw a hallway split the cabin in half. On one side there were two doors and in the very back, the kitchen. On the right side, there was only one door and what I could see was a very open room.

“Thanks.” Again, he bit off his words, and I knew this was difficult for him.

“I’ll get the fire started if you want to see what’s in the freezer that you might like. The bathroom is the second door to the left, the kitchen is straight back.” He went through to the another room and I could hear him in there working.

I went into the kitchen, a room that ran along the entire back end of the cabin, a dining area to the right was lit by sunlight from a very large window that took up most of the wall. Stainless steel gleamed in the kitchen area, from the fridge to the stove, and even the countertops. It was all very chic and professional looking. I went to the fridge and found the freezer section.

Steak, chops, and frozen meals from a rather posh looking company. I saw one that proclaimed it was the best chicken alfredo in the world and checked the instructions. I put the oven on and waited. Jake soon came through and took a bottle of water out of the fridge.

“I can cook for you if you prefer, Laney. Those frozen dinners aren’t bad, but I don’t mind cooking, I swear.” He looked down at the box doubtfully.

“No, this is fine. Besides, I’m not really hungry right now. Just, a little nervous I guess.”

“There’s no Carol here, no one to interrupt us, I didn’t even bring my phone.” He moved towards me and I looked up at him happily. “It’s just you and me and whatever we want to do, Laney.”

“Don’t you want to watch the show?” I asked impishly, my eyes laughing up at him.

“You aren’t really watching it, are you? I can’t even stand to hear the introduction music. It’s all just so awful. If that’s what you want to do, I guess we can watch it. There are so many better things to do though.”

I put my arms around his waist and pulled him to me. “You’re right, Jake, and all I want to do is kiss you.”
