“Errr...it doesn’t work quite like that.”
“It does now.” He walked forward until he was just an inch away from me. He bent down and kissed my forehead, surprising me.
“Be good. If you won’t have tacos with me, at least get some rest. And charge me for it.”
I smiled wide. “Now that’s a good idea.”
“I’m full of good ideas.”
“No,” I said, shaking my head, “actually you’re not.”
He swatted me on the butt again and said, “Get out of here, before I kidnap you. See you later.”
He walked away from me then and I watched him, feeling conflicted. Was I really starting to develop feelings for Erik, but most importantly, was he starting to develop feelings for me?
I watched him get into his car and then I promptly got into mine. I drove without really thinking to the pharmacy. My mind was on Erik the whole time.
I could feel that the nature of our relationship was changing, but I had ignored it. And now things were getting complicated and I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I wasn’t interested in a relationship. Okay, that’s a lie. I was lying to myself. I definitely wanted a relationship with Erik. But was he interested? Didn’t he say he didn’t do relationships?
And what if he decided to change his mind? What if he asked me to be in a relationship with him? Would I really say no?
I walked around aimlessly for a few minutes and then decided to just ask the cashier where the painkillers were. She was a blotchy teen and moodily pointed toward the sign that clearly said painkillers.
“Oh, there’s a sign. Sorry.”
I could tell it took the teenager’s every ounce of self-control to not roll her eyes at me.
I chuckled to myself and limped toward the painkiller aisle. And I stopped dead in my tracks.
My throat closed up when I saw him and I wanted to immediately run out and disappear. But whatever, I wasn’t the type to back down and run, so I figured I shouldn’t start now. And let’s be honest, I couldn’t run in my present shape anyway.
So with as much dignity as I could muster, I squared my shoulders and made my way toward the painkillers where my ex-husband was currently standing, facing me, but still looking down at the box of pills in his hand.
He hadn’t spotted me yet, but I knew in a few seconds he would.
I counted down in my head. Five, four, three, two---
He began walking toward me without even looking up. “Misha!” he said, surprised as he almost plowed into me.
“Hello, Wyatt. Excuse me,” I said, not even giving him another glance as I studied the bajillion bottles of painkillers in front of me. I rarely took meds, so I didn’t know what I was doing or what to buy. I only knew that I didn’t want to be in any more pain and my knee and ankle were killing me.
“So, hi...how are you?” he said to the back of my head.
I didn’t bother turning around as I replied, “Great.” I didn’t ask him how he was doing. Why would I? I could only hope the painkillers were for his balls because someone had punched him there.
If only my thoughts could manifest into reality, I thought wistfully to myself.
“I see you scratched up your knee. Want me to take a look at it?”
Annoyed, I said, “I didn’t know you were still here. And no, I don’t want you to take a look at it. Being an engineer does not mean you’re an MD. Just FYI.”
“Still my fiery Misha.”
I turned and looked at him. “First of all, I’m not yours. The divorce was finalized almost five months ago. And second of all, why are you still here?”
“There’s no need for so much animosity--”
“You stuck your penis into another woman’s vagina,” I said matter-of-factly. “I think I’m entitled to treat you with as much animosity as I can muster.”
