“How long have I been out?” I asked to distract myself.

“I don’t know. I came after your surgery. I’m not sure how long you were in surgery.”

I turned away from him, not wanting him to see me cry. And I truly felt like crying. So many emotions were running through my head. I was scared that I wouldn’t get full use of my hand again. I was scared that a surgeon had left a scalpel in me. I was scared that I would somehow get sepsis and then just keel over. I was a ball of fear, nerves and anxiety. I wanted my grandma. I needed my family.

“Misha?” he asked hesitantly. “You okay?”

“Can you get the doctor for me?” I asked softly.

“Yeah, sure. I’ll be back.” He seemed hesitant, like he didn’t want to leave me, but I didn’t want him around.

I needed him out of the room so that I could cry without feeling self-conscious. As soon as he was out of the door, the tears came. I don’t know why I was so upset, but I was. I was glad I was alright, but I guess waking up in a hospital without knowing what was going on and having to deal with my ex-husband was the last thing I expected when I opened my eyes.

And it was then that I felt the pain. Nearly every time I took a deep breath, I felt pain. It hurt to sob and I tried to will the pain away. God, this was miserable. Now, I kind of understood what Lacey had been going through. Oh yeah, Lacey!

I looked for my phone and found it on the nightstand near me. I called Emmaline and no one answered. I called Jude, no answer. I called Oliver and finally got an answer.

“Misha?” he asked surprised. “You’re already awake? I’ll be up in a few minutes! My grandson was just born!”

I smiled. “It’s a boy!”

“It’s a boy!” I went to raise my arm to cheer and thought better of it when a searing pain went up my side.

“I’ll be up to see you shortly. I’m so glad you’re awake. You had me on pins and needles.”

“I’m alive. Take your time. And congratulations...Grandpa.”

“This is probably one the happiest days of my life,” he confessed. I could hear the smile in his voice. We said our goodbyes and I thought about his last statement. I had thought the worst day of my life had been when my parents had given me up without a fight, but once I had gotten over that, the next worse day of my life was when Emmaline told me she was thinking of dropping out of school because she was pregnant with Dora. But we had gotten through that. And the list continued with more “worst” days…from the day I lost my business and Wyatt told me that he had gotten someone else pregnant...followed by the day that Erik decided that he didn’t love me. I had gotten through all those days and I would get through this one.

I was resilient. I was tough.

Wyatt soon came back with the doctor and when the doctor referred to Wyatt as my husband, I immediately corrected him calling him my ex. The doctor looked at Wyatt with annoyance and explained to him the consequences of lying to gain entrance to a patient’s room and information. Wyatt tried to look unconcerned, but I could tell the doctor’s words had given him pause.

The doctor was great in other ways as well. He had an excellent bedside manner. He explained all that had happened to me and everything that they had done to help me. He even apologized because they hadn’t been able to save my ovary. I had smiled up at him and thanked him for at least leaving me with one. He talked about my chances of conceiving if I ever wanted to venture down that path, which I was now conflicted over, and it wasn’t as grim as I thought it would be. Apparently, lots of women conceived with just one ovary. I thought that was pretty cool. And I questioned why I was so concerned about that. I didn’t want kids, right? And after I left the hospital, I swore to myself that I would just focus on me and not get involved with another man for a while, if ever again. Yes, I would just focus on me and what made me happy.

And I think that’s what Uncle Niko had been trying to tell me before. He hadn’t been trying to tell me not to focus on a career, he was just telling me to focus on me and my wants and needs because clearly, I had an issue trying to make others happy. My divorce hadn’t even been finalized for a month when I had started my fling with Erik, a fling that had turned into much more, at least for me. And where had that gotten me? Heartbroken. I needed to try to be alone for a while. I needed to know that I would be okay just being me.

I thanked the doctor for his help and settled back against the pillow.

“Comfortable?” Wyatt asked.

“Good enough.”

“I can go out and buy another.”

“Wyatt, why are you even here? Who called you?”

“Your grandma---”

“Grandma?!” She had never been a fan of Wyatt. I’m not sure why she called him.

“Yeah, she called and started yelling at me about you not having health insurance and how the least I could do was pay for your hospital bill.”

I had to laugh, that sounded like my grandma.

He laughed too. “It took me a while to figure out what she was talking about and what was going on. Your family has always been a bit eccentric.”

I shrugged. “Crazy. Go ahead. You can say crazy.”
