“Okay. Thanks again, for helping,” I said, wondering if I were a bad person for taking my ex’s money. He had plenty of it though and it wasn’t as if I had asked for it. My grandma had though. You had to love her. That woman was full of surprises.
Wyatt tried to kiss me on my forehead again and Erik caught him by the shoulder at the same time I was turning my head away from the kiss.
“Hey! Get your hands off me!”
And to my surprise, Erik unceremoniously pushed Wyatt through the door.
“I can’t believe you were married to someone like that,” Erik said as Wyatt huffily walked away.
“Well, I dated someone like you...and that didn’t turn out much better.”
Clearly, he wasn’t there to argue with me as he didn’t respond at all to my caustic comment. He just let his eyes run over me.
“I hate seeing you here...like this...” he finally said. “Are you in pain?”
“A little.”
“Are you taking something for it?”
“Yeah, all the good stuff. At least, I think it’s the good stuff.”
He chuckled and said, “You sound sort of giddy.”
“Well, let’s see, I came here to support my pregnant best friend and instead ended up getting plowed into by someone who didn’t even have the common decency to stop.”
“It was a hit and run?” Erik asked angrily.
“That’s what the doc said. So I’m more than sort of giddy. I’m scared, upset, scared again.”
“You have every right to be scared,” he reached for my good hand and I used it to toss a pillow at him instead.
He easily caught it. “I don’t need you to tell me that I have a right to my own emotions, Erik.”
He was annoying me and his presence was unnerving. “Who told you I was here?”
I didn’t want to continue talking about my emotions. And I hoped the change of subject wasn’t too noticeable.
“I called to check on Lacey and Oliver told me what had happened. He was really upset and I could barely understand him.”
“Yeah, it was crazy. I just bent down to pick up his keys and the car came from nowhere.”
He nodded. “I’m glad you’re okay. I feel like I lost years of my life when Oliver told me what happened.”
I shook my head. “This all feels so surreal. Anyway, what are you doing here? I thought you went out of town.” Oliver had mentioned something like that, but I hadn’t asked for any details. Besides Emmaline, no one knew of my disastrous arrangement with Erik.
“I came back when I heard.”
“Sorry.”
“There’s nothing to be sorry for. You’re more important than a business trip, especially that one. They didn’t even plan to play golf.”
“What’s a business trip without golf? Cheapskates.”
“Tell me about it. Anyway, I’m here to take you home after you get discharged.”
“That’s nice of you, but I plan to make other arrangements.”
“Come on, Misha. Let me help you.”
