He looked at me and then sighed. “I shouldn’t be doing this.”
“It’s the least you can do for me,” I said testily.
He sighed again. “Okay, let me call Oliver.”
Oliver appeared minutes later and between the two of them they helped me out of the car. As I approached the private door that led to Oliver’s wing of the hospital, I noticed a wheelchair there.
“Seriously, Oliver? Please tell me that’s not for me.”
“Okay. It’s not for you.”
I smiled gratefully and then squeaked in rage when they proceeded to try to lower me into it. I couldn’t exactly fight back without hurting myself, so instead I just stewed silently after I threatened both of them.
“Lying is bad. Just in case neither of you were aware of that.”
“Duly noted,” said Oliver dryly. He smiled broadly at me and then glanced back at Erik who was pushing my wheelchair.
I folded my arms across my chest as best as I could with a busted-up hand and within a few minutes we were entering a section of the hospital that I hadn’t seen before. It looked more like a hotel than a hospital.
“So, this is where they keep all the VIPs,” I said in awe.
Oliver laughed. “Only the best for my family.”
I spotted Emmaline and Jude first, outside in the hall chatting with each other. Emmaline squeaked when she saw me and hurriedly made her way to my side, hugging me gently.
“Oh my God...I’m so happy you’re alright. I was so scared.” And then she started crying. To my chagrin, I started crying too. I wasn’t sobbing, but tears were certainly streaming.
I finally pulled away and awkwardly pat her on the back. “I’m okay. Everything’s fine. I can even walk, but they made me sit in this thing.”
She laughed. “You’re the one who just had surgery and yet you’re trying to comfort me.”
“The irony of it all...” Oliver commented, making us laugh.
Jude had made his way over as well. “I’m sorry my dad almost got you killed, but I’m glad you made it out of surgery in one piece.”
“Good job making an old man feel guilty,” said Oliver heatedly. I knew the two of them were going to get into a fight right then and there, so I tried my best to head them off.
“Well, technically I’m not in one piece...I’m technically missing a piece.”
“Oh, I’m sorry, Misha. I didn’t know. I apologize for being insensitive--”
“See how your tasteless joke hurt her feelings,” Oliver spit out.
“See how forgetting your wallet can get someone killed.”
“Guys...guys...can I see Lacey and the baby?”
They immediately stopped going at each other’s throats and smiled. “Baby Sebastian is beautiful,” Oliver said tearing up. “He looks just like me.”
Jude laughed, “No, he doesn’t.”
Oliver ignored him and said to me instead, “You’ve seen me cry a lot today. I hope you don’t think I’m losing my mind.”
“Not your mind, just the wall you built around your old, grubby heart,” Jude said matter-of-factly.
“Thanks, Son.”
“You’re welcome, Dad.”
