“I’m fine, just sleepy.”
“If you say so…. So are you seeing someone this week? Another hot date?”
I shrugged. “Maybe. Don’t know.” I knew Becca was just trying to make conversation, but I didn’t feel like talking. I was too busy feeling sorry for myself.
“Just call him.”
“Call who?”
“Whoever you’re so gaga over.”
“I’m not gaga over anyone.”
“Then why do you keep staring at your phone, willing it to ring?”
I refused to acknowledge what she’d said. “I’m fine. I think I’ll just head out for a walk.” I stood up and glanced at my phone.
I was determined to leave my phone there, but I couldn’t help myself. I grabbed it and stuck it in my pocket. I ignored Becca’s pointed look.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
But I heard a laugh as soon as I walked out the door. Great. Now she was laughing at me.
My phone rang and my heart skipped a beat. I rushed to retrieve it from my pocket and put it up to my ear. “Hi,” I said breathlessly without looking at the caller ID.
“Hi, Piper, this is Sylvia.”
I tried to hide my disappointment as I said, “Hi, Sylvia.”
“Everything ok? That was the most unenthusiastic greeting I’ve gotten in a long time. I hope you’re not still angry about your date with Geoff? Again, I apologize that you were somehow paired with him. I’m not sure how that happened. Our system is flawless.”
“Apparently not…”
She had called me the day after my date with Geoff to apologize. Apparently, he had been a big baby and had complained about my disappearance to the agency. Sylvia had been totally on my side. She was a sweetheart. I just didn’t feel like talking to her now. There was one person I wanted to talk to and that person clearly didn’t want to talk to me.
“So, as you know, Jean-Bernard really wants to see you again. It’s just that he’s been out of the country working.”
I grunted in reply. I hadn’t thought of Jean-Bernard in a while, but maybe he could help distract me from this whole Ty disaster. Jean-Bernard had texted me recently and I had responded, but I couldn’t remember what he had texted me about since my mind had been occupied by Ty.
Ty. What a waste of my time and energy.
I realized then that Sylvia was waiting for me to use words instead of grunts. I sighed. “Yes, I know he’d like to see me again.”
“Would you be open to another date with him?”
“Yeah. I have nothing better to do,” I grumbled.
“Okkkkk then,” Sylvia said clearly taken aback by my response, but not wanting to press her luck further. “You know, you can choose to try a different match, if you like.”
“Really? I thought I had met my quota already?” How many guys had I dated? There was Jean-Bernard, Geoff…and Ty. But Ty wasn’t associated with the agency.
“No, not at all. Plus Geoff was a dud, so we would like to make that up to you.”
“Hmm… you know what? Why not?” I found myself saying. I needed a distraction from Ty and I needed one now.
“Great. I’ll send you details.”
