She laughed softly, wishing she could have seen Logan’s reaction to his new PA. With practiced fingers she gathered up celery to chop on the chopping board for the chicken soup she was making.

“I know, but still, thanks.” She kept her eyes on her fingers as she chopped the celery. “It’s good to know he won’t be distracted at least.”

“It’s not like even the prettiest of the applicants would have been any kind of competition for you, Keily.” Rosa mused and the typing paused. “Logan barely even looks at any women when he actually comes out of his inner sanctum.”

“I’ve noticed that.” Keily hummed and paused in her chopping. “Still, it’s nice that there will be someone competent in the office for him.”

“As long as she isn’t sexy, beautiful, or even remotely interested in Logan, right?” Rosa laughed and went back to typing.

“It’s that interested in Logan part that’s most important. Interest creates problems, even if the man isn’t looking at the other woman.” Keily had looked away often enough when she was married to Joe, and he’d caused quite a few problems for them both. She’d always found that the women that were interested in him, but he didn’t look twice at, caused more problems than even he managed to create.

“Tell me about it,” Rosa muttered and Keily knew the woman had stuck a pen in her mouth, something she often did at work when she was doing too much at once.

“Take that pen out of your mouth, Rosa, you’ll ruin your jaw clenching it on that pen.”

“It’s better than smoking,” Rosa complained back at her and Keily had to agree. “Anyway, if I get off the phone, I can concentrate on this. My lunch break is almost over so I’d better go.”

“You’d better, and don’t forget to open your office door back up.” Keily chuckled to herself as she said it. Rosa often forgot to open the door again if she stayed in for lunch and people would walk right by it thinking she was out. How they didn’t know by now that a closed door meant nothing where Rosa was concerned, was beyond Keily.

Rosa went back to work and Keily went back to preparing dinner. She almost had the soup and bread ready with a smile on her face by the time she heard Logan’s car pull up outside her apartment. He didn’t knock before he came in, just waltzed in like he owned the place. Technically, he was the one paying her rent, so she didn’t complain. Besides, it was nice to know he felt that much at home with her.

“Hi.” She murmured, walking up to him with a wide smile. “How was your day?”

She slid into his arms, admiring his caged strength when his arms wrapped around her gently. It felt good to be so close to him, to smell his cologne, and to just…feel him. She let her head sink to the place beneath his right shoulder that held her head so perfectly.

“It was good, dinner smells nice.” His finger came up to brush at her hair, loose around her shoulders, before he planted a kiss on the top of her head and pulled away.

“It’s chicken soup with French bread I made this afternoon.” She answered his unasked question. “It was all I could think of to make.”

“Sounds good. I’m going to shower and then we can eat.” He waited for her to nod before he walked away.

He’d taken off his suit jacket and wore only a dark gray button-up shirt and his black slacks. Those slacks did wonderful things for his ass and she enjoyed every second of watching him walk away. She loved to watch how his muscles moved, revealed themselves, as he walked away, and knew she’d get to explore all of those lovely places on him later. He’d had a present in his hand when he walked in so tonight would be a good night.

Keily’s lips quirked up into a pleased smile as she walked back into the kitchen and poured the homemade soup into two bowls and cut up the bread. He often brought her these little gifts; expensive treats that made her eyes light up. Every now and then words she didn’t like to think about, ugly words that questioned her character popped into her head, but she knew that wasn’t what this was. Logan was just…kind.

Dinner was on the table by the time he came out, a thick black terrycloth towel wrapped around his waist. Her eyes went wide as he waltzed into the room, chest still sprinkled with water. The broad plains of muscle that banded his chest flowed down to the hills and valleys of his abs, where a line of water traced down below his belly button to draw her eyes to a path that was stopped by the place where he’d hooked the towel together. Her mouth watered as she remembered what was hidden beneath that towel.

“It looks great,” Logan said, coming up to her to kiss her cheek before he went to a chair and sat down.

Disappointment drew her eyebrows down for a moment before she smoothed them out and went to her own chair across from him. She smoothed the black material of her long-sleeved t-shirt dress down over her lap and picked up her spoon. “Is it warm enough for you in here?”

“Yes, it’s fine.” He looked up at her, heat burning in his eyes. He picked up his spoon instead of leaving his seat, so she picked up her own as well.

He wanted to wait to get to the fun stuff. Well, that was fine with her.

His eyes drifted down to the deep V of her neckline in a way that told her he wasn’t as immune to her presence as he pretended. Desire made his nostrils flare, but he didn’t put that damned spoon down.

Truth be told, she didn’t care what kind of gift he’d brought her tonight, he’d brought her so many she was becoming a little bored with them. Well, not really bored, since he brought her such nice gifts, but something about them had started to unsettle her a little. Perhaps it was those words she kept at bay in her mind, nagging at her.

She didn’t care if Logan never gave her another gift, all she wanted right now was him. Deep down, she’d started to like the way she felt around him. She felt safe, adored, wanted, all of which were things she’d never really felt before. As a child, her mother wanted to use her for pageant prizes, her husband wanted a housemaid and a body to find pleasure in. Even her sister needed her as a babysitter more than she did a family member.

“Are you alright, Keily?” He asked, his attention fully on the soup. “This is good by the way.”

“Thanks, and yes, I’m fine.” She put her spoon down in the bowl and looked over at him. “Why?”

“Well, it’s just that your cheeks are a little flushed.”

“Oh, yes, I’m fine. It’s just a little warm in here, that’s all.” She hedged and looked away. It was all a part of the game. Tempt him, tease him, and then she’d get exactly what she wanted from him and it wasn’t whatever was in that box.
